do you have any Arab friends

Unfortunately, since I live in way northern NY, I have no exotic friends at this time. The most exotic food we have here is Korean and I practically live at that restaurant. there are no Arab restaurants here, or I would go and try it myself! Next time I am in NYC I will look into this though. Sounds interesting!

I am thinking of trying one of the raw meat recipes in NT. I've never had it so

I'm wondering if there is a particularly good type to start with and also how

does it taste comapred to cooked meat? When I first read about it, it sounded

gross and I thought I would never eat it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with eating raw

meat.. I personally have to have my meat rare. Mostly

for me it's just a head thing.

I wish that I had been raised eating raw meat and bugs

because I think those things are very healthy but

unfortunately I couldn't get myself to change my mind

about my thoughts. I've considered doing hypnosis for

that.

Debby,

I'm the same way! I'd eat bugs if I could get over the

psychological aspect of it... maybe someday. I'm sure our ancestors

probably ate the occassional insect. I'm generally not scared to

try things, but I had to draw the line at bugs. Maybe someday I'll

get up the nerve.

Thanks, I enjoyed your post :)

Yes that is exactly what I'm trying to say.

I think they ate them regularly and on purpose. Many

modern hunter gatherers eat them. I've also it's more

common in certain cultures, such as in Thailand I read

somewhere they eat things like crickets, and I've read

that in Africa they eat Locusts. Sorry if any of this

info is wrong, we are relying on my faulty memory. :)

Yes, I've always wanted to try snake and exotic eggs

like duck and quail, but I'm too chicken (pun

intended). :)

Bee suggested I start small like trying bison, so I'm

just waiting for the finances to catch up to my

wishes.

Thanks.. nice to know I'm not the only weird one who

wished she wasn't raised to think bugs and other

things are gross.

ah......but the thing you all are forgetting is that you do eat lots of

bugs, everyday, you just don't know it.

Oh yeah I know this. In fact I used to avoid washing

my veggies hoping I was getting some snuck in that I

wouldn't notice. But then people gave me other

reasons why I should wash them like pesticide residue,

so now I wash them.

But I tried to trick myself into eating more bugs.

Maybe I should have someone sneak a few crushed ones

in my food when I'm not looking. :)

Hi Debby

Don't feel so bad about not including the little bugs in your

diet.... some years back I was eating my way thru some steamed

certified organic spinach & then suddenly I crunched on something

with the MOST VILE bitter taste that you could ever imagine. I

vomited right there on the spot infront of about 3 family members who

sadly for me responded in fits of laughter once they realised I had

infact chomped on the ugliest STINK BUG you have ever seen! I really

wanted somebody to offer me some sympathy but they just thought that

me & all my 'eat organic' preaching turned out to be all too

hysterical.....

To this day I still have that terrible taste in my mouth if I think

about it too much & have never really been able to enjoy spinach

since!!!! & yes I had washed it so these days I really have a good

look for bugs as I find quite a few especially love to set up home in

the cert org broccoli that I buy!!! I prefer my protein from a more

deliberate source!!!!

LOL

Just thought I'd add that my DH and I were talking about a great way to eat bugs

the other

day...use the blender! Now, we haven't tried this yet, and I'm not sure how we

would

gather the bugs exactly, and what kind, but I think the taste and texture would

be fine (so

long as it weren't stink bugs :); if it works with raw liver, it should work

with bugs (we've

both been eating a raw liver shake, with buttter, lots of cayenne, and garlic,

and few times

a week, and it's not bad at all!) I'm all about mimicking the way our ancestors

ate, and yes,

they ate bugs, raw organ meat and raw fat, brains, blood, etc. I'm mentally

working on

being ready for brains and blood....the paranoia that society bred into me at a

young age

is a tough hurdle to overcome.

Do the rest of you eat raw brains/blood?

Hi Debby,

I used to be married to a real country boy - we lived out in the

middle of nowhere and raised a lot of animals, also hunted a lot.

(It was a bad marriage but a good experience that I miss sometimes

now.) We ate all kinds of things. One thing that was just

wonderful and I wish I could get now, was guinea and guinea eggs.

The meat is delicious! Their eggs are tastier than chicken eggs, in

my opinion. The eggs are smaller, but the texture is thicker and

richer. We also ate eggs that we found around on our property, from

the native birds - I can't remember now which birds, but hubby knew

the names of all of them.

My hubby didn't catch snakes or anything, but he ate snake. Once a

year, he'd order wild game from Cabela's.

Humans can eat almost ANYTHING; it's amazing.

Unfortunately, he has a big problem with eating raw foods and would

have a fit if he ever thought I fed my son anything raw. He (hubby)

had salmonella once and said it was the worst thing he's ever been

through.

I get bison from Wild Oats (same as Whole Foods, and other natural

stores). But it is SO EXPENSIVE!! Any organic meats are expensive,

but especially bison and lamb, which happen to be my favorites. I

hope you get to try it sometime; it's great! The biggest problem

with eating organic is the expense. That's really the main reason I

stopped eating much meat and relied too much on fruit. But what I

found was that it wasn't worth skimping - I paid for it with my

health. Now I'm spending a lot more on meat, and skimping on other

things (like now I don't have to buy toothpaste or deodorant

anymore, I can make my own thanks to you all sharing your secrets),

but it's definitely worth the extra cost to feel better.

Sorry if I got too long-winded. I've enjoyed the discussion.

You guys are REALLY grossing me out with all this bug stuff...LOL... but to

each their own. I guess I'm just a different breed... I suppose. :)

I must avoid this thread for now on... but I thought I'd pass on the news

before I do.

There's a site who sells ants in capsules and claim various healing properties

for humans with eating ants. So if you like ants and don't have the time or

patience to dig into an ant farm... might want to check this site out.

http://www.dragonherbs.com/products/products.asp?sku=007

In addition, I don't have the fact sheets with me any longer to tell you the

exact names. A lady at my old job gave me a book listing the names of

ingrediants to look out for in products and what they mean... but I think

(guessing) red dye #3 is actualy red bugs. They use bugs since it's cheaper.

This is found in M & M's candy and also in some spaghetti and pizza

sauces...usualy the cheap brands.

And snapple tea... one or two of their flavours (again I forget which flavours

since I don't drink it and read this so long ago) they use beetles in their tea.

They boil beetles and use the gooey stuff inbetween the shell and the body... or

was it they use the body and not the shell?

They were phoned to complain about this and the why's... the receptionist

didn't know about it and said she'd investigate. Upon phoning back she said yes

it is true, but was dumbfounded about it herself.

I'm sure we're aware that the FDA allows so many bugs to be in foods... but

the least amount of bugs in chocolate for instance... is organic chocolate.

Okay... since I must avoid sugar ect now... this gives me more motivation to

follow the Bee's diet. :)

Thanks for that entertaining story ! Sorry you

had to have such a bad experience. One time when I

was clipping the ends off some green beans, I noticed

a little hole in one of them, so I opened it up and

inside was a worm.. Yucky. :)

Slips should teach you, not defeat you. Never throw in the towel for the rest of

The problem for me is I don't want to know about it,

or my head can't deal with it. So I either need

someone not to tell me, or a hypnotist or retraining

of my brain.

Yup, it's so cool to me to think I am eating what I

evolved for.

No I don't do brains, but I like my meat nice and

bloody.

I have never been able to deliberately eat a bug. I've inhaled a few now

and then during the summer.

When I was in grade school our 7th-grade teacher had us all out catching

grasshoppers one late summer week near the end of the school year. We

must've caught several hundred of them for her. She wouldn't tell us

what she planned on doing with them. Bt we sure had fun catching them.

Years later, my mom told me she told several curious parents that she

liked chocolate-covered grashoppers for snacks. She didn't want the kids

to know, though.

I believe insects have a circulatory fluid based on copper, whereas ours

is based on iron. Maybe that's why they are so bitter?
