Well.... all he has to do is actually read and follow " Dr. Atkins New Diet

Revolution, " in which Dr. Atkins spells out how the plan works and what it

entails and how to customize it for your individual needs and metabolism. He

clearly calls this a low carb, moderate protein, high fat plan.

It sounds as if your friend is doing " fake Atkins, " in other words, an

" Atkins plan " that isn't really anything like what Dr. Atkins wrote. There

is a LOT more to Atkins than just cutting carbs. It's a whole program

designed to put a metabolic disorder into remission, to get the body to

conserve muscle and burn fat, to improve energy levels, eradicate cravings,

and be more physically active. So .... I would just say he should buy DANDR,

read it, follow it as written and see if it works for him, and then decide

what he thinks about high fat diets.

One thing Dr. Atkins is clear on, when you eat a lot of protein, more than

your body really needs, it's turned into glucose. You almost may as well

have eaten carbs. Atkins doesn't work if you aren't eating high fat, it

really doesn't. It's NOT a high protein diet (although certainly it's " meat

friendly " ... I eat meat three times a day).

You can also tell your friend I get around 70 percent of my calories from

fat and have lost 133.5 pounds so far and never felt better in my entire

life.

I had an original Atkins book around 1981 that was very high fat, lots of

cream and tasty stuff. I wondered what happened when I got the New Diet

Revolution

book as there seemed to be less of that.

Hmmmm, I do agree that Atkins rephrased some things <G>, but I still find

DANDR to be full of cream and tasty stuff. <G>

Christie, do you know if this also applies to dogs and cats?

I don't know about dogs, but I know that cats have a much higher dietary need of

protein than people.

High quality (Kitty NT).

Cats and dogs can convert both protein and fat into glucogen and store it in

the liver. I believe they are much more efficient at using fat in this way

than humans are.

I include in " cats " the big cats.

Christie, on Amazon there are two DANDR books:

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, New and Revised Edition

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (Paperback)

(I'm not sure of the publication dates.) Which is the one you refer to as the

'best' Atkins,

or are they very similar?

I've been following the insulin spike thread and see there's debate over the

best

macronutrient ratio for insulin resistant types. From your posts, Christie, it

seems DANDR

is at least a good place to start for my dh to better understand the insulin

issue. He is the

type who always asks for scientific evidence.

Any other resources (books, articles) on the subject appreciated.

Thanks, Daphne

People differ, so you have to play with his diet to see what works

best for him. You need a diet where blood sugar can be controlled,

and yet it is composed of foods that he will enjoy. That takes some

experimenting.
