Re: Mold Remediation Filtration Tables

I have constructed many similar downdraft tables for contents cleaning, and they are typically sized and configured for the contents to be cleaned – usually sized for the biggest item. The downdraft table by Relle appears sized for small item cleaning, e.g., a book, a box, a pot. I believe that it would be difficult to put a chair, or a coffee table, or a chest of drawers on Relle’s table and effectively control emissions. Also, I would not rely on the table, alone, to control emissions, as the velocity of air even 6-in from most downdraft tables drops well below 100-fpm. Therefore, persons still need to be in PPE and I would still recommend that a portable containment be placed over and around the table; when cleaning contents. The fact that Relle allows a 2,000-fcm air unit to attach to each table, along with a tapered plenum to distribute air flow, are good design features. The fact that Relle’s tables are plastic, light-weight, and easily disassemble are good points to. Have I come across similar downdraft tables?.......no.

Dear Group,

My business development firm has been working with Relle IAQ Solutions

to help them market their mold remediation downdraft table for the

process of contents remediation http://www.relleinc.com/iaq_prod.asp

The table is quite unique and has done well so far in the U.S. market,

but has had a surprising amount of interest in it from overseas.

My question to the group is has anyone come across similar downdraft

tables for contents remediation. I have not in my inquiries, but was

curious if the group had. Thank you everyone.

Sincerely,

Dear ,

Thank you for your insight and feedback. The table top is 3’ X 4’ and can be joined together with additional tables to obtain a very large cleaning surface.

The benefit of using the Relle table is to reduce the particulate exposure to the worker and to direct the air stream away from the object and remediation worker. A second major benefit is that it dramatically reduces the amount of particulate in a containment that is being used for contents remediation. When used with HEPA vacs and brushes, most of the particulate is sucked down and filtered by the attached 2000 CFM HEPA filtered air scrubber.

Based on Relle’s experience in clean room containments the particulate load is dramatically reduced when cleaning items over down draft tables. HEPA vacuuming on top of a normal table was releasing too much particulate from the HEPA vac brushes.

In a contents remediation job, Relle also use one table just to receive non-cleaned contents items which reduces particulates released due to moving and stacking items that are waiting to be cleaned.

The Relle process for on-site contents remediation is inventory first, and then rough clean items outside of clean room. Seal contents in bags or boxes as appropriate, move into clean room staging area on down draft table.

In this clean room we evaluate and clean contents 90%, and have an IAQ Professional on site to make the call of what remediation activities are needed for each type or class of item, oversee the remediation activities, and monitor the environment in our clean rooms. Last we repack and move contents to the second clean room.

A second clean room is used to complete the remediation, final inspection by IAQ Professional, final inventory, packing, and final signature by IAQ Professional that the items have been remediated according to their protocol and have passed final inspection and are ready to be returned to the owner.

The IAQ professionals, most of who are CIHs, are quite pleased with the process and find it in complete compliance with IICRC S520.

As far as PPE, Relle does use all appropriate PPE as necessitated by the work performed. The use of down draft tables does not eliminate the need for PPE, but it dramatically reduces the particulate exposure to their remediation workers. It is very hard to get most art/object conservators to follow correct PPE protocol (many art conservators have begun using the tables) and we find that there is some compromise between them and the IAQ professional for PPE requirements and the need to be careful with very expensive and or irreplaceable items.
