I hope you don't mind me chiming in here with my 2 cents. I was

convinced of the benefits of the Primal Defense last summer and

bought several bottles for my family. I quickly realized that even

at the discount price I couldn't keep up that expense. I

thought " what did people do before PD, and probiotic supplements? " I

researched Soil Based Organisms, probiotics, etc. and decided to try

Kombucha, Kefir and EM. We started the Kombucha in November, the

Kefir in January and I just bought the EM in May. We have been

working on incorporating more of the soaked, fermented grains,

vegetables, etc. in our diet as well. We didn't have any severe

health problems to notice any big changes, but I know what we are

doing has got to be better than doing nothing or spending a lot on

supplements. Completing a colon/parasite cleanse has been beneficial

too.

For anyone taking expensive probiotic supplements, I heartily

recommend trying Kefir made with REAL Kefir grains.

I bought probiotics at one point (though not Primal Defense)

and they did work. I've also experimented with Kombucha,

Kefir, and Kimchi (the 3 K's!). Kefir has the most probiotic

effect for me. But I don't do dairy, so I switched to Kefir

beer (or Kefir pop, for the less fermented crowd). They

work fine too! The $100 a month or so that I would have

spent on probiotics was just too much. EM is more affordable,

but I just haven't experimented with it yet.

For getting rid of bloating and other gut issues, the Pascalite

has worked very well, esp. combined with the Warrior Diet.

My gut seems to need a " rest " ... maybe to build up enzyme

stores or something (taking enzymes helps a lot of people too).

Pascalite pushes the bacterial mix in the right direction ... or maybe

since it IS a kind of soil (clay) it encourages those " soil organisms "

by giving them the environment they need? I dunno, but it

works for me.

i hear ya, but it's the only supplement i'm buying now and as

supplements go, i think they're worth the price.

I

> thought " what did people do before PD, and probiotic supplements? "

well...before PD and probiotics were necessary, as they are now, they

weren't NEEDED. why? people lived closer to the earth, the soil.

they didn't live in sterilized environments like we do now. they

didn't have chemicals that killed everything in the soil, like modern

ag. does now. they didn't put chlorine in the water that kills the

gut bacteria, like is done now. and i'm not done yet! probably

pasteurized and irradiated foods do the same thing. and then there's

antibiotics...not only are they overprescribed, but they are in our

FOOD!! again, constantly killing our healthy gut bacteria.

why did jordan rubin, a previously healthy young man, almost die of

crohn's disease? because his gut was overrun with bad bact. and he

had almost no good bact. why? because of all the above. bad food,

bad water, bad chemicals, and an overly clean environment devoid of

these healthy bact.

and how did these people live in the past, who had plenty of good

bact? well, if dr. price was right, they ate lots of natural,

healthy foods that actually PROMOTED the existence of a healthy

bioflora. the food today does just the opposite.

Debbie, i drank about a quart of kefir EVERY DAY made from REAL KEFIR

grains because i couldn't tolerate raw milk.

and that seemed to do almost NOTHING for me.

i think my gut bact. was SO BAD it was beyond kefir, you know what i

mean?

coconut oil does a very similar thing. it cleans out the bad bact.

i got 'deathly' ill TWICE from doing coconut oil cuz i didn't know to

start slow.

and that wasn't enuf as i STILL had a reaction from the 'dirt pills.'

to each his own...i was in bad shape and i've had drastic results

from theses pills. i had a severe herxheimer reaction (die off).

and before i spent a YEAR drinking all that kefir, i had cleaned up

my diet for about 5 years, no alcohol white flour or sugar, or rarely.

i would say the food changes helped a little but not enuf. the kefir

also helped a little but not enuf.

what really helped me turn the corner was the coc. oil, the dirt

pills and the kombucha; they are all pretty powerful i gather.

i have the energy i had as a teen. i've been tired since i was a

teen and i'm getting back my energy.

for some people kefir might be enuf. but it wasn't for me.

the proof of that for me, is, that if i go a few days without the hso

pills, i start to feel tired, my diabetes symtoms start to return a

little, and then i'll take one of the pills and it 'moves' me if you

get my drift. that means to me that i need them to be 'normal' and

that if i don't take them, my good healthy gut bact. starts to go

away and the bad bact. starts to come back.

i know not everyone is like me. my husband and i live in the same

house, eat the same food only he eats outside the house too and

doesn't eat as 'clean' as me. he is in good health, not fat like i

am and is fairly energetic, which i have never tended to be.

i gave him a dirt pill. NO REACTION!! i couldn't believe it. so

maybe he doesn't need them!! maybe for reasons i have no idea of,

his flora is okay.

I just discovered something this week. I've been taking PD for a long time

now - over a year, I think. At first, 10 scoops/day had a dramatic positive

effect on my stools (they firmed up). But now, it doesn't matter how much PD

I take, it doesn't seem to have any effect. I was having diarrhea on and off

for almost two weeks recently while taking PD.

Then, a week ago, I started having *sheep* kefir and sheep yogurt each day.

My stools improved *immediately* and dramatically. While sheep milk products

are not cheap, they are a heck of a lot cheaper than PD and taste

fantastic. Unfortunately, I do have some sort of food intolerance and it

could be casein, although the test I'm taking only lets me know whether I'm

allergic to cow's milk.

Nonetheless, I suspect that not all kefir is created equal - either the

colonies or the medium. I had been drinking *goat* kefir previously without

the dramatic improvement in stools. And it was made with kefir grains from

the same mother-grain as the sheep kefir. Hmmmm....
