Guest guest
When taking samples for testing, I've been told you should milk directly into the sample container rather than pulling samples from a bulk tank or random bottle. Supposedly it keeps the counts lower. Is that how you do it? I'll take a look at your web site as well. Thanks! Tammy K. Guest guest
For me I can't do that for testing. My inspector comes and takes a bottle of milk just as it would be sold. So it is in a bottle and labeled and ready to go. Debbie gets low counts because she is hand milking I believe. I machine milk and it is a bit harder to get counts as low as 1 or 2 on a consistent basis. My counts are always below 10 but I have to use bleach on everything. I am sure it would be a lot harder for a large operation to do this as well. Not imposable but much harder. Guest guest
Texas Raw for retail is 10 coliforms, dont know what the big deal is all about. You would think that producers and consumers would want it as low as posible. Seems as the dairys get larger quality control is harder to manage. --- debbie_at_rainhaven wrote: > I don't know what other Grade A retail raw dairies > in Washington state have > had for their counts, but my bottled milk has been > sampled almost every > month since I got my Grade A retail raw license > August 12, 2005, and > most of the time there was NO coliform count at all > found, and otherwise a > a high of 2, with one time a count of 10; my total > bacteria counts have all > been under 2,000 and usually under 1,000 with this > year frequently being > under 250. Guest guest
Bob, If your equipment is clean and in good repair why would there be a big spike in Coliform? If your getting a rise in Coliform from Bulk tank to Bottle there must be something causing this rise, so why can't it be addressed? When we were a large herd milking 1300 cows we were rarly over 20 and most of the time under 10. Are there other states that require less then 10 in the bottle for raw retail? --- Bob Hayles wrote: > If I am not mistaken, Texas raw for retail 10 > coliforms standard is > based on sampling at the bulk tank, not at the > bottle as the new Calif > standard demands. > > Coliforms increase, sometimes exponentially, with > time and handling, > as in the bottling process. Guest guest
In WA state it is Less than 10. At the bottle. I've been told the state inspectors don't even have to get the sample bottle from the farm. They can go buy it at any store where sold. The only regulation is that the milk not be past the 'sell/use by date' on the bottle. In my case that could be from any one of 6 current retail outlets. We not only milk by machine but on a pipeline as well. Our counts remain low. Although I have no idea what they have been since this past summer as the state now refuses to provide producers with those results unless demanded via the Freedom of Information Act.
