Guest guest
most of what I have seen in autism has some connections with what you have observed, but consider the following. Everyone here is asleep. so forgive my mistakes in typing in the dark. Every child with autism seems to be somewhat different. There are of course, many factors in common. My daughter, for example, also sets very rigid rules for those who play with her, and there is some frustration when others can not meet these goals. however, she does not relate to others not liking her. People are like objects to her. When a car does not start, we are angry. When we can not read directions on putting a child's toy together, we grow frustrated. Others are there for autistic children to utilize, or so it would seem. They do not wonder why they are not accepted. It is of no importance. Autistic children may well not answer those who talk first to them. Why answer a book you have not chosen to read. Please do not confuse " too smart " with proof of no autism. My daughter taught herself algebra in the last few weeks, but she is clearly autistic. Your youngest seems to warrent further evaluation. Sorry if I'm not being PC. Just trying to be honest. Best I can do for you for now I'm afraid. Good luck and enjoy the beauty of being a parent. Joy wrote: New here My nephew has Aspergers. Upon learning about this it has made me wonder about my children. Maybe I am worry too much. However my youngest was speech delayed. They once wondered if she had Autism. However now that she can talk they say she interacts too mcuh. I often wonder though. She is 3.5 and just started really talking in sentances. In public she shuts down. She refuses to talk to people. I often tell people she is just shy. However deep with in I wonder. She also has this blank stare too. When she does something wrong and you ask her why she did that or tell her to say she is sorry for hurting another child, she will just stare this blank stare. No one will take it seriously and they say she is fine. Developmentaly she is right where she should be and was too smart for Jeep program. A program that takes special needs preschool. She tested out of the program even though teachers where worried about her at first. Once she got to know them she talked. That is how she is she won't talk to others out side her comfort zone. She acts so much like my nephew its scarey. She sneaks into things. She has chewed up her bed. Literaly chewed the wood like a puppy. She is destructive too. she will break things and riped the wall paper off the wall in her room. In church she refuses to interact with the other children. She won't sing or participate. But at home she sings the songs just fine. Now then for my next Oldest Daughter she has always been smart. We never worried about her at all tell now. She has always been clumsy. However she also has fine moter skill problems and can't cut with scissors she is 8 years old. After several tests because she can't read. I am finding out she has auditory processing disorder and sensory intergration and we worry because she has a hard time making friends. She was very shy as a kid too. She still can be. She is very emotional and although she don't throw huge fits she does cry a lot in frustration of not making friends. If some one doesn't fit her mold then she won't be friends with them. Also she picks a friend and is friends with the same person for years. She will be hurt if that friend then has other friends. She will complain they don't like her. Basicly what they are saying is that she can't process everything like most kids. Something about a language impairment is why she can't read and struggles with it. I want to find out more about Girls with Autism. I am very courious with my girls having so many symptoms. Maybe I worry too much but I do want to know. Anyone with any info to contribute would be great. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

Guest guest
Well first off Joy, it is nice to have you join us! I can not write much right now as I am just about ready to head off to get some sleep before somebody wakes up. But to introduce myself: I am a stay of home, work at home mom of 3 children all with High functioning Autism. The two older ones are girls ages 6 and 4 and the youngest is our son age 2.5. The things you said about your 3.5 yr old daughter sound almost just like my 4 year old. She has also chewed her bed and torn off every last shred of wallpaper, destroyed everything in the house and in others houses. Destruction seems to be a common thing amongst children with Autism, especially at a young age. Your older daughter sounds like she probably does not have regular full blown autism to be able to be concerned about her friends and express her feelings as well as she is, but sounds very much like she could have Aspergers. However I do not want to be the one to judge without knowing more details, because I have been having some stupid specialists telling me that my son may no longer be considered Autistic, because he is learning to talk too well, and they are not around him to see everything else he does or doesn't do. So I do not want to be telling you things I do not know about the way this lady does to me. Both of your children do sound like they may have some things to get help on, and definately not to just let slide. I would be concerned if I was there mom too, so you have the right to be concerned. You are there mom and God gave you the responsability and right to inspiration for your children and to have that " Mommy Gut " feeling and know when something is not right. Good luck with things and talk to you more later, DOn't freak out too much though as this is a long process of learning and it is not like there is anything you have to do right now, that you haven't already done. Loving them, and seeking knowledge and truth and support and strength to help them learn and grow and you be a better mom is all you can do really and that takes time. So get some much needed rest, " I'm sure " and lots more of us will respond tomorrow. Sincerely, Esther --- Joy wrote: > New here > > My nephew has Aspergers. Guest guest
Joy, I have a daughter that was diagnosed when she was 6. I had to keep telling the doctors there is something wrong and they would tell me the same thing she is fine she will catch up. Well my daughter is 8 and can not read and can only write what is on the paper. She has a hard time with numbers. The suggestion I can give you is maybe change doctors and even see a peditartic neurologist. That is who I got to finally diagnose my daughter. Do you live in Michigan? Guest guest
Hello and welcome. I am a mother of 4, 2 boys with ASD and 2 girls, 1 with ASD. In getting my children diagnosed it has been pretty different. My oldest was a no brainer...lining up toys didn't talk until he was 3 ish and covered his ears at everything with the slightest noise. He's very affectionate which threw many docs through a loop due to the typical not wanting to be touched ideas of the time. He is very bright academically and now can express his feelings. The doctors and specialist told me he would be in special classes forever and he is fully included with success. My second boy was just diagnosed at 6 and since he has the OT he needs he has been doing well. His dignosis was a surprise since he hit all of his basic milestones on time, but I was comparing him with his brother and so, he " looked normal " to me. My 4 year old daughter picks up some of the Autistic behaviors around the house but when she is at school she is just like the other kids. She hit her milestones early and is just a sassy little girl. Now living with Autism in my family and being a special ed teacher for 13 years, my 2.5 year old daughter showed signs early. We drove across the country from Madison, WI to Portland, OR when she was 5 months old and she only cried once. She would sit and just look at everybody. She didn't smile until she was 3 months old and even then it was rare. She didn't walk until she was 1.5 years old and showed little interest in doing so. We got lots of OT, PT and Speech for over a year and then they made the formal dignosis 2 months ago. She is talking, she shows emotion appropriately (most of the time) and having an older sister who was not effected helped in her learning social skills. She is doing so well... Intelligence, well she picks up everything and at 2.5 years old she plays computer games with ease, knows her colors, shapes, numbers and letters. She has fixated on them so much that she will drill these concepts over and over by herself. So, intelligence can be there in a strong way. Have your girls assessed it is your right and the sooner the better. Sorry my letter is so long. If you have this feeling do it. It is to the benefit of your girls. Guest guest
I appreciate all the replies so far. I guess looking into audtitory processing its on the spectrum of Autism but is not considered Autism. But with my oldest I am not sure. What it could be. No one takes us serious with her tell just now anyway. As far as some one said not being too smart. I totaly know about that. My nephew can tell you how far away the moon is from the earth but not zip his pants. He is so so smart in some ways. It blows you away. I am not sure how to get my youngest screened for it. It seems like with a girl no one takes you seriously. Many people will say that she will out grow it. Or that she is going through her terrable twos later. I don't know. But I really appreciate the insight so far.
