Rub the cukes with salt and let them stand for a few hours or overnight. 2. Boil 2 qts of water. Add 4 T salt. Let cool. Add 4T vinegar. 3. In each jar, add a sprig of dill (or dried dill, if that's what you have), a couple of garlic cloves, some peppercorns, and a red pepper. 4. Rinse off the cukes. Stuff them into the jars. Cover with the salted water. 5. Let them sit for a couple of days to a week, then put them in the fridge. Adding grape leaves helps keep them crunchy. These came out GREAT last fall.
