Guest guest
Great stuff!! I actually think the councelor makes these social stories for us. Thanks for your help! amadelala01 wrote: Hi, - The best advice I can think of is 1. Have a transition meeting between yourself and old and new service providers - including teachers. 2. Make sure to visit her new school and her new teacher. Most schools are very good about letting kids with special needs - especially autism - visit and get the lay of the land. 3. Are you familiar with social stories? If not, go to thegraycenter.org. They are simple stories that are often very helpful in explaining things to kids with ASD - defining situations, providing explanations about expected (vs unexpected) behaviors, providing insight into other's perspectives, and preparing for transitions. An example I wrote for another child is below. Simplify the language if you need to. And definitely add pictures - preferably photos of the real places and people. I hope this helps - My name is ______. I am _____ years old. I used to go to preschool at ___________(school name). In preschool, my teacher was Mr/Mrs/Ms ________. Starting in September, some things about school will be the same and some things will be different. These things will be the same or almost the same: We will still sing songs. We will still read stories. We will still play – inside and outside. These things will be different: My school will be different. I will go to ______ School. My grade will be different. I will be a kindergartener. This is OK, it just means I am getting older. My teacher will be different. My new teacher's name is Mr/Mrs/Ms ________. (Add info about special teachers – Special Ed, speech, music, PE, etc.) Some of the other kids in my new kindergarten class may be kids I know or kids from my preschool. Some of the other kids in my kindergarten class will be new to me. Meeting new kids means that I may make some new friends. My mom (dad, etc.) and teacher can help me make new friends. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
