Guest guest
Dear all, Well, I write this to share our joy. Amrita, our daughter, too has decided to step into her father's *Quo vadis* and brother's shoes. Last week, the results of the state and Sevagram PMT were published, and Amrita was delighted to learn that the white apron and the Littmann would soon become a part of her paraphernalia. Amrita opted for medicine, but took her time to do that. Is it OK to spend ten agonizingly long years getting that elusive MD, she mused? Is designing a house a better trade than trying to ease the dis-eased, she pondered over? Not an easy toss. Ultimately she listened to her heart and chose medicine. I am not sure but she seems to have been inspired by Atul Gawande's wonderful book, *Complications* that she had read last month. And we heaved a huge sigh of relief! Atul Gawande incidentally is a US born and US raised young surgeon and journalist (he writes a regular column for New York Times). His recent book on the mistakes the doctors make has been very well received. Amrita will join MGIMS where I teach, and will spend her formative years in the same hospital where Bhavana and I work. Being a student in the same institute where your parents work can have its own share of pluses and minuses. Sevagram is a small village- our home is a five- minute walk from the hospital - and children loathe their parents shadowing them or breathing down their shoulders. We do hope that Amrita, like Ashwini did, will find ways and means to acquire, and zealously guard, her identity. Please shower your blessings on Amrita- please help her become a good doctor.
