Go with the bigger size; I've never seen anyone complain about having too much

freezer space ! We have a second hand upright, which I love, because it only

cost me $30.00 ;) But, it does make things difficult to stack and pack in

tightly. But, it's easy to see what's inside. Each style has their pros and

cons. If we buy another, I'll probably get a chest style.

Our current freezer is about 16 cubic feet. I usually keep 1/4 side of beef,

5-7 chickens and 4 gallons of milk along with misc other stuff inside it.

Maybe if I ask another way...What size freezers do you all have and how

many pounds of meat can you get in them? Do you like the chest

freezers or the upright freezers? Where do you all recommend buying a

freezer?

Thanks, Sandy

LOL. I didn't answer because I don't know how many cubic feet mine is.

It's the standard size chest freezer - about 3 ft. high, 2 or 3 ft. deep

and 4 or 5 feet wide. Chest freezers are supposed to be more efficient

and less likely to frost. I was told by one guy that there are only 2

companies making chest freezers, so they're all pretty much equal - just

look for the best price. I got mine at Lowe's (or Home Depot). The

prices can range quite a bit, so check around. I think Sear's was

pretty high.

I'm thinking that you would need that size for that much meat, although

it might could all be crammed into the smaller - but I'm not sure.

Mine is an upright - 46 " x 22 " approximately for outer dimensions from

Sears (as it is close to pick up). My last food order was:

2 50 lbs each beef variety packs

1 case (12) whole chickens

2 10 lb pk cases chicken leg/thigh quarters

1 25 lb pork breakfast sausage

That was over 200 lbs easily, but I have a bit of spare room in the side

by side frig, where the blackberries allowed a bit of meat to be stored

as well. When you have a lot of irregularly shaped stuff, like large

poultry, it can become a problem, but generally not.

A chest can fit more, but safety can be an issue if you have people

falling in. I dislike having to just about fall into the freezer

retrieving bottom of the freezer items. So I like an upright for

convenience, generally speaking.
