Guest guest Posted May 18, 2005 Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 Strawberries, like bananas and tomatoes are picked pretty much green before shipping out which means they'll ripen off the vine, before the mice, bugs get them. If you want quicker ripening I'd leave them at room temp instead of fridge, or even in sunny window. Length of day determines most strawberry fruiting but there are day neutral varieties that don't need day length. Description of your variety should tell you. Anyway, not a stupid question, at all. I watched the little guys all that day and checked them again in the morning - seems like they did, in fact, do most of the ripening during the day with the sun. Which saves me from the mice, but not the birds. I didn't realize that strawberries were among those that would continue to ripen off the vine - or maybe I did, but blocked it out of my head because, ya know, REALLY ripening on the vine is the definition of nirvana, so ... In any event, it seems like I'll luck out - I was really annoyed (emphasis on *really*) because I was losing all the very first ones - I've been waiting over a year for these guys, so you understand. Heh. But there are enough coming in now that I think I'll still be okay sharing a few with the critters. Now all I gotta do is wait for the raspberries .... mmmmmmmmmmmmm. (oh, my varieties aren't day neutral, fwiw) MFJ Ideas are funny that way ... you go and let one loose, and suddenly it's crashing about the place, bashing up against other peoples' heads. Raspberries and more asparagus our next perennial plantings. Liking this perennial food gathering, low work, maintainence routine more and more. I considered putting in an asparagus bed this year, but 1) I have no clue where to put it; and 2) I'm not sure I like asparagus *that* much. This year of getting it from my favorite farmer will tell the tale, I guess - I have some coming on Tuesday.
