Mason jar questions--freezing

Hi folks,

Can a regular mason jar be put into the freezer without breaking? I wanted to

put some

frozen butter into one, and put it in the freezer for about a week. Or do I

need a different

type of jar to do that? I see that Ball has " freeze " jars so maybe I have to

get some of

those, eh? Can I freeze the pretty jelly jars that they make?

Thanks for the help. I googled, but didn't google the right place I guess.

Found tons of

places to buy 'em, but not the info I needed to answer these questions.

I have not had a problem with mason jars breaking in the freezer. I make

sure they are not full and also that whatever I am freezing is refrigerator

cold and not room temperature before freezing.

I freeze mason jars as well and have never had an issue. I leave plenty of

room at the top for the food to expand and an careful not to bump them they

are right out of the freezer, but other than that, I've had no problems and

have never had one break on me.

I freeze stock in them all the time but I leave the lids loose until the

stock is frozen and stops expanding. I did have one break on me when the

stock expanded too much and the lid was on tight.
