Guest guest
I'm interested in this topic too. My daughter starts school in March and we need to get something for the bus but don't know how else we'll be using it. Sophia crawls (poorly) and I doubt she'll be walking in time for school. Now her PT tells me she may never really walk except as exercise and she recommends a wheelchair with a good seating system like the Panda or Kimba. Her OT, on the other hand, says we just need something light for the bus because once she's in school, she'll either be on the floor crawling or at a table. I'm totally confused and hopefully we'll be discussing it next week at her IEP meeting. Anyway, I saw a woman pushing her daughter in the Kimba in Target and I got her opinion. She liked the adjustability and the fact that you could pull the seat out and put it onto different bases, like a stroller base vs. a high chair base. She's had it for two years and it still has room to grow. You can take it apart to break down and put in a regular trunk, but it's kind of bulky. If we have to do more of a wheelchair than a stroller, I think I might try this one. > > What about the Kimba by Otto Bock? > > > > _____ > > From: polymicrogyria [mailto:polymicrogyria ] > On Behalf Of bryanandshelley > Sent: Friday, August 04, 2006 12:00 AM > To: polymicrogyria > Subject: Re: Seating Systems and Wheelchairs/Strollers > > > > Thank you Sharon! Guest guest
Hey , We are on our second wheelchair with Dillon. The first one we got was not approved for the school bus, it did not have the proper hook-ups for safety. If your daughter will be riding the bus to school, that is one thing to consider. Also, the first stroller we got was very heavy and took up a lot of room in the back of the explorer. I don't think it would have even fit in a regular car. It was about all I could do to get it lifted up into the car. It was a kimba, I believe, just check it out. Up here we have a seating clinic at Hurley rehab, a pt, an ot and a rep from the medical supplier make an appt. with you and decide the best set-up for you and your child. I do like the chair we have now. Good luck, I hope this helps. Harriet

Guest guest
Hi , No Idea What Is Going On With My Emails !!! If Alyssa has no trunk or head control the Kid Kart might not be right for her. It was a good seating system while our was under the age of 3 but from that point on he needed a chair with more custom support. The Kid Kart does break down quite easy. I have seen pictures of the Kimba and have heard great things about it. Good luck, Sharon bryanandshelley wrote: Our daughter is in need of a new wheelchair and we are trying to decide between the Kid Kart and the Kimba wheelchairs. Guest guest
Hi our son Daire recently got a Quickie wheelchair Ziggy is the model, it has tilt ability, great when youre out and he falls asleep. I found it great and he's very comfortable in it. He had a Kimba star prior to this which i found cumbersome especially when you had to put it in boot of car, fiddly and arkward to put together especially in rain. Hope this helps. mum to Daire age 4 years.
Guest guest
Does this chair provide good head and trunk control because my son is 22 months and has a kid chart and it doesn't seem to have a good head piece on it. > > Hi our son Daire recently got a Quickie wheelchair Ziggy is the model, > it has tilt ability, great when youre out and he falls asleep. Guest guest
> > Harriet, > What chair do you have now? > > Thx, > ,' Sorry I accidentally deleted this mail and just remembered it. We now have a Spree XT by invacare. I works great for the bus and school, but it is bulky and heavy. I am not sure you can get away from that. We have a lg. size umbrella type stroller that a friend whos daughter has cp finally outgrew. That works good for fast trips. Dillon has pretty good trunk control now so he really doesn't need a whole lot of support. The wheelchair is custom ordered, we went to Hurley to the wheelchair clinic and they set it up for us. It can tilt back so if Dillon falls asleep he can be tipped back for comfort. It's a pretty nice chair. Harriet
Guest guest
Hi , has the SpreeXt by Invacare.. It is bulky but we love it. Our DME guy is from National Seating and Mobility and found us the perfect custom head/shoulder rest for . It is called a HAWC is by Metalcraft-Industri es. It is located under Pads, Cushions & Covers. used to use their Occipital Ring but his head still had to have something under the chin. The HAWC is bendable and bends under his chin enough to keep his head up but not so up that he can't see his tray/computer/ artwork etc. The Teacher/Therapist/ Bus Drivers are sooo happy with it. We do not use the snap piece that the HAWC comes with that is made to go under the chin. It is made to unsnap when the child's head rests on it so as not to choke but we have never used it because the way the HAWC already bends in under 's chin. The HAWC has even helped with the drooling for whatever reason. The teachers feel that is much happier and has even made a possible yes/no movement with his head. We do not have a stroller. We like how the Spree tilts back when is sleepy or needs to rest his head. Maybe you have a DME facility that you can look at all the different types our kiddos are in. Good luck.
