Resisting Stress and cortisol overload

Hello All,

Maybe you can help me. I'm going to be going on a trip for two weeks

where I will be working 14 hour days and have very limited control over

what will be available to eat. The best I'll be able to do it is to

make wise choices about the food available and bring supplements with

me. The last time I had a schedule anything like this by the end I was

weepy and emotional, had lost weight despite eating lots, and then got

sick. I didn't know at the time, but now I recognize it as being

classic signs that I was on cortisol overdrive.

How can I prevent this from happening to me again? How can I keep my

resistance up and avoid totally wearing myself out? What are the best

(and most portable) supplements and supper foods for this sort of

thing? I'm very interested in any suggestions. Thanks so much!

Johannah,

_The Diet Cure_ by Ross has a chapter with very pragmatic

suggestions for eating in situations like you describe.

In fact, the whole book would probably serve you well.

I have a major problem, when travelling also, esp. because I have

food allergy issues which REALLY make me sick. This last time

I took a bit of Pascalite with each meal, plus extra supplements.

I bought some peanut butter and apples which, for me, can sub

for a meal nicely. And canned anchovies. And red wine in the

evening (available anywhere!). Sometimes I bring dried anchovies

too, but that depends on the company.

Eating out I got big salads with lox. Ceviche is available in a lot

of places now. Seafood is easy. Steak is available just about

anywhere too, and many stores sell kimchi now. Korean and Thail

restaurants are pretty NT by their nature, as are the more pricey

American places, and some Mexican restaurants.

With relatives I do stuff like buy a roast or salmon for dinner ...

i.e. help provide food, something I want to eat! And I help cook it

if possible.

But it kind of depends on what YOUR diet normally is, what gets along

with you personally. Also it would help if you knew what it

was about travelling that messes you up. It took me years

to figure it out for me ... when I ate out, I would always get

the " breakfast special " which includes toast or english muffin,

and that was the ONLY time I ate those things since we just never

kept bread at home. Fast food places have different ingredients

than you would expect too, which can really mess you up.

This is the first trip I *didn't* end up with a total emotional

breakdown by the end.
