Guest guest
I talked to a man from Cameroon today. Cameroon is on the west coast of Africa. He had perfect looking teeth, so I asked him if they were naturally straight or if he had had braces. He said they were naturally straight and added that he had never been to a dentist in his life. He looked in the low to mid-30's. I inquired about his diet and he said they ate a lot of fresh vegetables and more potatoes than bread. I inquired about meat and he said they ate a lot of fish, not so much meat, because fish is less expensive and is widely available, even inland. He said they would fry in palm oil and drank fresh palm juice, which if left to ferment would become palm wine. He said they used very little refined and processed foods and that he never goes to Mc's. He said when he first came to the US he didn't feel as well the first year but realized it was probably because of the food so he went back to eating more natural foods and now he feels fine. Also, he was a very extroverted, interested, lively, cheerful fellow who laughed quite easily. From pictures I have seen, it appears that even in the present day, quite a few Africans still have perfect teeth, at least compared to the the pretty much zero you would find in industrialized countries. Guest guest
I also visited with an African student about his diet growing up back home. He also had perfect teeth. He was in his 20s. Perfect skin, perfect teeth, perfect hair. Didn't look a day over 30. Never eats at restaurants here in the US. Lots of fish and veggies. Don't know about fats -- wasn't that aware back then. Guest guest
Price sure was right, but I think the best food he mentioned was shellfish, more than anything else. mike > > > I also visited with an African student about his diet growing up back > > home. > > > > He also had perfect teeth. Guest guest
This subject line made me stop and think.... I know it's somewhat unusual, but is it really *that* rare not to have perfect teeth these days? I don't claim to have wide dental arches, but I have near-perfect teeth with no real crowding, never wore braces, no adult teeth pulled (except wisdom teeth on insistence of my mother, wish I hadn't as they were coming in fine), never had a cavity in my life. I'm 25 and I brush my teeth once a day with baking soda. You guys are making it sound like it's astonishing to see perfect teeth these days. I see quite a few people, including white Americans, who have nice broad faces, square jaws, and great teeth (although many have probably had orthodontics and cavities). Of course, many of these people come from more rural areas where they grew up eating real food. Guest guest
Tom- >You guys are >making it sound like it's astonishing to see perfect teeth these days. >I see quite a few people, including white Americans, who have nice >broad faces, square jaws, and great teeth (although many have probably >had orthodontics and cavities). Of course, many of these people come >from more rural areas where they grew up eating real food. It's pretty rare in my experience. My teeth describe a pretty serpentine route through my mouth. I was supposed to get braces as a kid, but there was never any money for them. Generally speaking, I'm lucky to have escaped the clutches of the dental profession, but I don't know whether there are any drawbacks to braces other than the pain and inconvenience. -
