OK, for us lay folks. What does this mean? It might as well be Chinese.

I can answer your questions. I had this hypothesis already. Cyp2D6 is an enzyme

within a group of enzymes that degrade chemical compounds in the body. What

this person is stating is the Cyp2D6 degrades SSRIs.

Polymorphisms mean multiple (poly) forms (morphisms). In otherwords there are

multiple different types of the cyp2d6 gene. Different individuals within the

populations have genetic variations in the gene for this enzyme, and some forms

of the enzyme works better than others.

Basically what it could mean is if you have the poorly performing form of the

enzymes, drugs will not be degraded as quickly by your body and will stick

around longer. This could mean that they would have more dramatic effects/side

effects on you because your body cannot clear them as quickly.

I started taking St. s Wart but not for the normal reasons people take it

(although I could use some mood enhancement). St. s Wart activates

production of some of your Cyp enzymes (cyp2D6 is not the only one). If you are

taking a prescription medicine needed for your health this could be a big

problem as it could degrade the drug. However if you are not taking a drug it

might help clear toxins from the body (just a hypothesis on my part). I figured

maybe this would help.

We will see when my 23andMe results come back which form of the enzyme I have.

I am going to go through the data and see if I can figure out any candidate

genes. In the future depending on what type of genetics I get trained on

perhaps I can do a study on SSRIs or PSSD to see what genetic difference we have

that others don't. Right now I don't have the proper training in statistics and

computer programming sadly.

Here is another good place to start if you want to know more about Cyp2D6
