Guest guest
having had a wt. problem since adolescence, and a serious wt. problem the last decade, i've been obsessed with reading all those books about wt. loss. i think i've read every one written in the last 20 years. has anyone read the rosedale diet? i'll sum it up for you. you know how insulin resistance and wt. gain came to the fore in the last 10 years? so if you can lower your insulin levels you can lose wt? well, this book deals with LEPTIN resistance. leptin controls hunger, and high insulin and high leptin usually go hand in hand. if you have high leptin levels, you are probably leptin resistant, which means you need more and more leptin in order to feel full. i can vouch for this; skinny people for the most part don't understand fat people, but i can vouch for the fact that we require much larger amt'.s of food to feel satisfied. and i guess it's not just because we are bigger and therefore need more food; there's something more sinister at work; leptin resistance. the diet is designed to lower leptin levels, thus decreasing your body's leptin resistance and thus enabling you to feel full faster and not eat so much. it's a very interesting book, but my problem with it is that he has bought into the whole anti-saturated fat thing so i can't eat how i want on his diet. i can abstain from sugar. alcohol and maybe carbs...but don't take my butter, grass fed beef and cream. the book is similar to all the low carb books, but he says you shouldn't eat too much protein, as excess protein is converted to glucose in the body thus raising leptin levels. so he is big on fats but 'healthy' fats; not sat. fat. Lots of fish and olive oil but i have to read further to clarify this. i haven't finished the book because i'm discouraged about his anti- saturated fat stance. however, i've gained even more wt. since joining wapf and don't know what to do. i've tried sally's EFLF; maybe i didn't give it a good enough chance. if i could combine Rosedale and WAPF, and throw in some coc. oil for good measure, and switch to tea from coffee (see my post on coffee/tea) i might have a winner. thanks for your input. laura

No one will take your butter, beef, or cream, and you just choose to eat the WAPF way within the guidelines of the Atkins plan. That's what I do and I've lost 127 pounds in just a bit under a year. I know Atkins isn't for everyone but what you describe IS Atkins, LOL ... that's why I mentioned it. Leptin, I dunno, but I will tell you that the minute I got my blood sugar under control on Atkins, which took one day for me, I had no more problems with my appetite. Guest guest
Christie... we had this conversation about a year ago...and you were kind enough to post all your food for a week or something; i was very grateful for that, and still am... my problem with doing it is in something you said back then. you said you've seen people do atkins, lose wt., eat carbs, gain it all back, and not be 'able' to go back on atkins, and when you said that, it scared me and in my ever so positive way of thinking, i thought to myself, geez, i bet i would be one of those people. so it's like...i have a decision to make. lose wt.? or eat carbs. lose wt? or eat carbs. hmmmm. i'm still thinking about it. laura > Well, why not do Atkins, then? Guest guest
, Have you tried Atkins? If so, what was your experience with it? It can be totally WAPF compatible as long as you avoid the process soy and other artificial junk. Guest guest
Hi Daphne, i tried atkins a few times before wapf...and i felt lousy each time and didn't lose wt. he says you can eat too much fat...and i was in ketosis and still hungry and eating all the time. my appetite didn't go away like it's supposed to. i was eating every 1-2 hours, whatever i could, meat, cheese, WHILE BEING IN KETOSIS. I thought ketosis was supposed to kill the appetite. well, it didn't!! i was eating way more than he said i should (all day cuz i was hungry and couldn't get satisfied w/out carbs) and i hated it. now that i'm eating wapf...the only thing is i drink a lot of raw milk and kefir. i don't think you can do milk on atkins. i'll tell ya, i hated it and i felt lousy (none of the foods were raw) and i didn't lose wt. i think i gave it a month or so (in ketosis!!) and finally gave up. laura > , > > Have you tried Atkins? The main reason people don't lose weight, or gain weight, is that they eat too much and exercise too little. Now, that's an insulting and useless thing to say in and of itself and I never found it the slightest bit helpful to me. What I DO find helpful is to ask the next question, which is: WHY do I eat in ways that aren't healthy for me? This is a rich question. There are many, many answers to it, different ones for different people. I think that for most insulin-resistant women, something like Atkins really is going to take care of whatever part of their problem is biochemical. Emotional and mental problems that exist *independently* of biochemical influences (not always clearcut!) are not likely to be helped by anything you do with diet, but the critical mass of insanity might be reduced so that you're able to handle it. That is what happened to me. I've seen others, though, who had so much mental/emotional baggage that it defeated them even when they got their blood sugar under control. I think gluten is probably very similar in that it creates mental and emotional symptoms that muddy the picture. Atkins induction is gluten-free, and I myself do not eat gluten. I don't, though, think that I'm gluten intolerant in particular, though I share the belief that gluten isn't good for anyone. That's why I avoid it. No, for me, the problem is and always has been just good old carbs. I can binge on potatos, rice, and wheat-free sweets.
