Buspar is a mild anti axienty medication. It is usually prescribed with SSRI. There are some evidance that it helps promote desire but the evidance is week. I wouldn't try it for PSSD. There are many other methods posted that could be more effective.

I have been reading a few articles stating that Buspar can help to treat the infamous persistent sexual side effects that result from taking SSRI's. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with using Buspar and did it actually helpThanksSB

I started taking buspar about 3 months after developing PSSD. PSSD developed

when I went cold turkey off lexapro in January, 2007, and woke up one day about

2 weeks later with the feeling that the world had fallen out from beneath me.

Up until that point, I was very sexual. It all ended overnight. I couldn't

have sex or even masturbate for most of 2007. The most horrible feelings of

anxiety overtook me and I was very suicidal-not necessarily because of the PSSD,

but because of the after-effects of lexapro.

Anyway, back to my buspar experience. A friend suggested buspar as a relief for

anxiety and I read that it could help with sexual problems, too.

I would say that the buspar saved my life, because it took control of the

anxiety without any side effects. It stopped the internal " shaking " that was

going on inside me 24 hours a day.

As far as sexually, after taking buspar for about a year and a half, and then a

little bit more a year later, I have to say it had no positive effect on my

sexuality. In fact, when i last went off of it, I found my sexuality improved.

I found that longer term, buspar sort of blunted my emotions. But it's slow and

over time. I found I responded better to sexual stimulation (visual, physical,

emotional, etc) more positively without buspar.

But as an anti anxiety pill with little to no feelings of " being on something, "

I would recommend trying buspar. I just probably wouldn't say to use it long

term. I don't know if it had long term side effects.

Thanks for your info about Buspar.

I've been off Effexor for about 10 days now. I had a couple of near-normal orgasms (by myself) after taking the last pill, but now I'm having problems again -- no orgasm or really bizarre orgams (like I had one that took place pretty much in the first 1" of my entire abdomen (skin side). Could it be more bizarre? I did have pelvic floor contractions with that one, but my clit pretty much got left out, as did my insides, despite the pelvic floor contractions. And how about this weirdness: while I was on Effexor, living alone, I didn't have much sex drive (despite having had a huge sex drive before Effexor), but would occasionally have spontaneous feelings "down there", would masturbate, and would have a NORMAL orgasm. Now I'm off Effexor, and having no or abnormal orgasms.

Is there anyone here who had a more or less normal sex life while on an SS/NRI, then lost it when they went off the drug?

I know part of it is my anxiety to have normal orgasms. Just wanting to be normal has put a lot of pressure on me. I've been taking Clonazepam for anxiety since 1997, and it fits me like a glove, make my psyche pretty normal, has eliminated the ghastly nightmares I used to have in the mornings. I wonder if adding Buspar for a while would help with the orgasms now. Or maybe I should just forget about orgasms, clean the house, fix the kitchen sink drain, & let the desperation subside.

Or maybe my problem is lack of a sex partner. There are so many variables I don't know what's coming (not me) & what's going (my sex drive?).

Buspar isn't going to be of help. Think about it like this- Buspar is designed

to calm over-excitement and that's kind of what happens when your body has an

orgasm. It can help some people with anxiety, but it had an overall negative

effect on my sexual reaction.

But whether you were kidding or not, you're on to something when you write to

clean the house, fix the sink, etc.. Accomplishing things that one might avoid,

stress over, seems to make my orgasms better in the day or days following.

  • 1 month later...

I have only been taking it for 3 days and I can honestly say Buspar has worked

more than anything to give me something resembling the lost libido and

ultimately erections I used to have. They would be suitable for sex and, in a

relationship, I could really see it being enough to be somewhat content.

As a side note, ive been off Lexapro since march 2010 and was on it for 4 years.
