Guest guest
Hi, Recently Shan posted a link to articles about the hazards of genetically modified food. I took a look, and was thoroughly unimpressed. Most of the " studies " cited were unpublished, and results and methods unavailable. Hate to say it, folks, but anyone can write a " study " like that and a press release to go with it... The two that I did find that did give some details were also unconvincing. The best one exposed mice to pulverized GM grain, and looked for responses. Not surprisingly, the mice developed an allergic response to the new protein. Repeated exposure led to lung damage. Whoopee - that would describe any protein that the mice had not been fed before. The same experiment could be done with pulverized organic wheat being blown at mice fed corn and barley - and the same allergic responses would occur. The other one that gave any details was just observational - that mice fed GM food were " more nervous " than those fed organic food. The observer goes on to say that the mice were circling, digging in the sawdust, and climbing the walls of the cage, behaviors that he " had never seen before. " That means he hasn't observed mice before, because every mouse I have seen - and that's hundreds - circles, snifs around, digs in the bedding, and occasionally stretches up along the wall to sniff the incoming air. GM foods are - contrary to what is said int he links - tested by the FDA. Some are rejected. Most are not, as the added protein does not produce any reaction after being FED to (not pulverized and blown at) test animals. I would also point out that in most of the cases, the protein that is added is the exact same one that these same groups advocate being sprayed on crops as a " natural " pesticide. They also claim that a lot of research is being suppressed. As usual, most of what is cited is from Russia, Bulgaria or some other equally inaccesible country, and the supposed researcher has been fired, arrested or otherwise made inaccessible (what a coincidence!). IMO the posibility of there being such research going on in those countries is near zero, just because they don't have the resources to spare to perform it. Beware the conspirace theories. Guest guest
I have CF and celiac disease and my boss is convinced it is from eating GM food. Guest guest
Hi All, actually I don't even care about the science, it is creepy and I have NO desire to eat enfoods. They are grown for megacorporate profit and no accountability to the consumer. Plus, they spread like any plant, there is no controlling them if things do get snakey. I don't think they know what the hell they are doing messing with nature's central codes and balances so casually. Scares the hell out of me in fact.
