Talk to me about CLO, EFAs, and prostaglandins

Ever since I lost all this weight, my mensttual periods have been kind of

messed up. Nothing major, no horrible pain or anything, but slightly

irregular and some heavier flows than I'm used to. I'm about to turn 46 and

my doctor feels this is just " normal, " other women who have lost 100 pounds

plus tell me this is quite common after a large weight loss.

I am at a total loss about my use of fish oil, CLO, and supplements said to

help with menstrual irregularities like evening primrose oil. I used to take

a lot of fish oil, then realized that high levels of PUFAs are not so good,

esp when I eat so much grass fed eggs, dairy, and meat (not exclusively or

year round, but lots), and cut way back. I was also taking 400 IUs of

vitamin E daily and have cut that to every other day out of some concern

over recent stories regarding ill effects of vitamin E, which I have not

really investigated yet - which isn't like me, I know!

I also decided to add CLO, but don't know how much, whether I need to stop

taking beta carotene in my multiple or if it doesn't matter, and how this

interacts with my fish oil supplement or my diet. I need to take it in

capsules because the oil just tastes nasty to me.

Last... I'm worried about too much inflammation and was taking a lot of

NSAIDs due to last year's back injury. I'm now totally off all

anti-inflammatories (which I know inhibit prostaglandins and might be the

cause of my menstrual problems), but am not sure about things like Evening

Primrose or Borage oil, which supposedly are anti-inflammatory despite being

Omega 6-rich.

I confess I am not used to being so completely bewildered about a topic, but

I've gotten myself really lost. Help?

Christie,

I can't even attempt to help in the supplement area! But I do have a

working theory that I am investigating myself in the same general area

that I thought I would share.

Ever since I have continued to change my eating habits (and finally

feeling like I am on the right path for me), my menstrual flow has

increased. The doctors say it is normal...perhaps premenopausal (I

don't buy it, I'm only 34.) I have been studying the thought that

women live longer than men because of this monthly refreshing of our

blood. And the theory that our menstrual cycle increases and

diminishes as needed for detox reasons. For example, it would get

heavier while going through a detox. Or, it might get lighter because

you don't have enough " building blocks " to support a detox. Or, it

might get lighter when you don't need to detox as much.

I can't site any specific sources as I haven't found anyone actually

doing research in this area. This is more a summation of years of

reading, coupled with my own experience...so this is just my thoughts.
