I have a shut off valve for the water softener, so we drink hard, but filtered water. I fill up the kettle and some pitchers with the softener bypassed. We're talkin', this water is so hard, you can see the stalactites growing on the faucets. If we didn't soften it, we'd be replacing appliances like water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, plumbing and fixtures often. Lots of calcium in our water. And you get this coating on your skin, yelch. I get most minerals in food, I don't know that this kind of hardness is the best for drinking. NT talks about two TX counties being night and day for hard water content, so I take kind of a middle approach. I am not in the town of Mineral Wells, which is well known for its " healing waters " .
