Dear all,

Well, I write this to share our joy. Amrita, our daughter, too has decided

delighted to learn that the white apron and the Littmann would soon become a

part of her paraphernalia.

Amrita opted for medicine, but took her time to do that. Is it OK to spend

ten agonizingly long years getting that elusive MD, she mused? Is designing

a house a better trade than trying to ease the dis-eased, she pondered over?

Not an easy toss. Ultimately she listened to her heart and chose medicine. I

am not sure but she seems to have been inspired by Atul Gawande's wonderful

book, *Complications* that she had read last month. And we heaved a huge

sigh of relief! Atul Gawande incidentally is a US born and US raised young

surgeon and journalist (he writes a regular column for New York Times). His

recent book on the mistakes the doctors make has been very well received.

Amrita will join MGIMS where I teach, and will spend her formative years in

the same hospital where Bhavana and I work. Being a student in the same

institute where your parents work can have its own share of pluses and

minuses. Sevagram is a small village- our home is a five- minute walk from

the hospital - and children loathe their parents shadowing them or breathing

down their shoulders. We do hope that Amrita, like Ashwini did, will find

ways and means to acquire, and zealously guard, her identity.

Please shower your blessings on Amrita- please help her become a good

doctor.

Congrats to all of you on Amrita's outstanding achievement.

And my condolences to Amrita for being handicapped by watch-parents and

watch-brothers, not to mention watch-uncles and watch-aunts, who will

scrutinize your every wayward gaze in the direction of any male in college.

Tough luck! :)

Respected Sir,

Congrats Amrita. I think she will surely shine like

her father and excell in everything she touches. Its

all about hard work and believing in your vision to do

better than what you are today.

This is something i have learnt from her father who

still remains a source of inspiration for me.

Best wishes to her. I am sure she will enjoy her term

in the college as we did.

with best wishes always,

Congrats Amrita. And to Drs Kalantri too!

I'm sure Amrita must already be familiar with the staff and the campus... so no

surprises there :-D

As far as the plusses and minuses in being a staff child, they used to be

significant during our hostel days, don't know how good or bad the scenario is

now...

Dear Dr. Kalantri,

Heartiest congratulations on your daughter's admission in MGIMS. I have no

doubt whatsoever that with the genes she has inherited, she will go on to

excel in this field just as you have done. Our best wishes to her always.

Dear Dr. Kalantri,

Congratulations to Amrita and both of you as parents.

I totally agree with you, no parents should push their children to any

particular profession. Now a days, time has changed and if your son/daughter is

bright, will shine in any feild.

Both my sons are really charmed by medical profession because they think their

parents do very exciting and 'cool' job, at present (12 & 14 years), but we will

see which direction they go.

I wish Amrita all the best in her future life.

God bless Amrita.
