Guest guest
We met with him almost three years ago. He's extremely knowledgeable and he won't sugarcoat things, so as long as you're emotionally prepared to hear what he has to say, he's probably the best person in the world for PMG information. Also, I suspect that he's probably seen more PMG patients than anyone in the world, with the possible exception of the Walsh lab. Dr. Dobyns is not a terribly warm person, I have to warn you. He may technically be a clinical physician, but his heart is clearly with the brains he's studying, not the patients who own them. For knowledge of his subject, however, I don't know that you could do better. --- SCHUYLER'S MONSTER http://schuylersmonster.com On Oct 29, 2006, at 9:57 PM, Coller-Brumbaugh wrote: > Has anyone met with Dr. Dobyns? Guest guest
He is very knowledgable but does not have good bedside manners. He is very matter of fact, straight forward (in my opinion some what rude) Very cold. Of course I guess you'd have to be to tell parents continually that Their child has issues. _____ From: polymicrogyria [mailto:polymicrogyria ] On Behalf Of Coller-Brumbaugh Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2006 10:57 PM To: polymicrogyria Subject: Dr. Dobyns Has anyone met with Dr. Dobyns? Guest guest
We took our son to Dr Dobyns 5 years ago.. bilateral frontal PMG.. and it was the most informative meeting we had had (he was 4 years old then)... Dobyns answered questions no one else could, and he was honest and clear with us.. no " bs " .. It was then, that we found out had been diagnosed Pachygyria, but it was actually polymicrogyria...caused by CMV... Dobyns requested test no one else had thought of.. It was a great meeting and well worth it...alot of tears, because of the " reality " check.. But definately worth the long trip from Connecticut to Chicago. Hasselberger, Mom to , turning 9 years old next month!!!! Coller-Brumbaugh wrote: Has anyone met with Dr. Dobyns? Guest guest
Here in Italy we have Dr.Guerrini who is the other expert in PMG in the world, and ypu description of Dobyns it's the same of him. But we have to remenmber that first of all they are scientist, researcher so they don't have " human touch " . Instead I had a wonderful experience with the Walsh Lab when we joined their research on PMG I talked with Kira Apse who was so kind with me she answered to all my question ( also stupid ones). Just an update on a She is doing great, we had some problems this summer with her negative mioclonus but we resolved it with just two drops of RIvotril (klonopin) Phisically she is recovering her delay , Speech terapy will be a very long way but she is improving , very very slowly but she is improving. i can't remeber if i ever posted about her brother & sister (twins) they are now 5 months cerebral ecography showed no problem at all they are doing great and a really loves them, we hope that they will help a lot especcially for speech terapy. kiss to all of you and a special kiss to Schuyler I always read you blog Rob the first time they talked us about CBPS I found yor site ( I mean Schuyler Monster not the blog ) on this argument

Guest guest
Yes , the Neurologist diagnosed " Pachygyria " but it was Dr. Dobyns who did more tests, and closer looks at the ct scans. He actually could tell based on other factors.. that was PMG and not Pachygyria.. It was a HUGE relief to us, because at the time it was unclear whether the pachygyra had a genetic link or not...the PMG was caused by a virus that I had.. which although unfortuneate... meant that there was less chance that my third child (who I was pregnant with at the time) could possibly have issues. From all that I have learned ( is 9) there are huge differences between Pachygyria and Polymicrogyria.. and even though we have an outstanding pediatric neurologist at Yale New Haven Hosp. she didnt have as much knowledge as the Dobyns clinic. They see more PMG and Pachygyria children than pretty much anyone else in the country..from what I believe I was told. I found it utterly fascinating when Dr. Dobyns showed me the in depth detail of the brain scan... and how what looked like Pachygyria...was not... go in deeper...and there were many tiny gyri...not just smooth sections. Good luck. Be tenacious... the best second opinion in my estimate is Dr. Dobyns.. Lewallen wrote: Did they think that you son had pachygyria at first but it ended up being pmg instead? Guest guest
Hey this is great stuff, nela has here first visit to Dobyns in March. About Dr.Guerrini, I've noticed that almost every medical paper written about PMG usually has his and Dobyns' names listed as contributor or co-authors. I've also seen where Dr.Guerrini has the added expertise of being a seizure disorder expert. He seems to be " The Man " when it comes to PMG with epilepsy. kunky72 wrote: Here in Italy we have Dr.Guerrini who is the other expert in PMG in the world, and ypu description of Dobyns it's the same of him. Guest guest
Just wanted to say that Dr. Guerrini is awesome. He reviewed my son's case for free and helped us greatly. I have a lot of respect for both Dobyns and Guerrini. I think that they both genuinely care for the children they treat. I think that the straightforwardness that can be confused for rude behavior is just a product of a logical scientific and brilliant mind. -Steve kunky72 wrote: Here in Italy we have Dr.Guerrini who is the other expert in PMG in the world, and ypu description of Dobyns it's the same of him. I usually check in with Dr. Dobyns by email every 6 months just to see if anything has come back with the sample. My entire family sent in a blood sample. He is very good at replying to my email.
