>(Christie) Drinking milk in your tea in England is so widespread

> that if you don't ask for it black, you'll get it with milk.

Mmmm, yes. You used to get it with sugar but now, just milk. I might

be wrong but there could be a big Indian influence in the way we drink

our tea, as Indians use a lot of milk and spices in their cha.

>Tea without milk is usually considered an oddity,

True, true, well it *is* odd...

> and something of an American aberration

False.

It's either weirdo foreigners, or weirdo vegans. Or tea snobs - so rare

they might be valuable. Not associated with Americans - associated with

Americans is tea so pale that it's merely glanced at a tea-bag, and then

been drowned in milk ;)

>along with Lipton tea

those bl. Europeans - not another yellow teabag, per-lease. They just

don't exist in blighty.

> instant tea

what???????????

>and the sinful practice of bringing a tea bag with the hot water in

restaurants

yeah, call that TEA? Happens again all over Europe*, but the worst

thing being being* brought HOT MILK with a tea-bag lying beside it.

*for the purposes of this post, this does not include Britain

*that's nice.

LOL, Helen... I just love being in the UK, where I can actually get tea in a

restaurant, inn, b & b, or just about anywhere, including a roadside kiosk or

caravan in a car park, and have it be strong, hot, and just right! In the

US, the only place I get tea the way I like it is in my house, or my mom's.

I had a friend come visit me from London, and he walked in my house and I

offered him a cup of tea. He started to turn me down, when another friend

said, " Don't worry, Stuart.... she's ONE OF YOU! " When he saw me get out the

Yorkshire Gold and make the tea in a pot, with a tea cosy, and then PUT THE

MILK IN THE CUP before pouring in the tea, he almost cried.

On the other hand, I went to London with an American friend, and on our

first day there, we were in a museum and going through the line in the

restaurant. I said to her, knowing she took her tea black, " Tell them you

want it black or you'll get it with milk. " She didn't say anything, and they

handed her a cup of milky tea. I asked her why she hadn't said anything, and

she answered, " I didn't believe you. I thought you were making it up. "

Cultural comments, indeed. <G>
