Guest guest Posted October 16, 2005 Report Share Posted October 16, 2005 I have been baking with sourdough for years but I have always used yeast to make the starter. Recently I have attempted to get a starter without yeast. Twice I have gotten a starter that works in that the bread rises fine and has a sour taste but it is also bitter. I am getting a film over the starter that is probably a type of yeast. I am guessing this is the problem as it has a slight odd odor. I am curious if anyone else has had this issue.
