I have been using mine for 6 months, daily and have never seen a film on top so I would be wary of that, as it might not be yeast but mold. The odd odor I attribute to sulfur compounds breaking down and its only present at a certain stage of the starter most of the time, but the bread or sourdough pancakes always taste great after cooking.
