I get slightly odd odors from my starter, but never a type of yeasty

film like you have described. I have been using mine for 6 months,

daily and have never seen a film on top so I would be wary of that, as

it might not be yeast but mold. The odd odor I attribute to sulfur

compounds breaking down and its only present at a certain stage of the

starter most of the time, but the bread or sourdough pancakes always

taste great after cooking.

BTW, I never used yeast to make a starter, I even started mine in a

basement and it worked great.
