Saurkraut

Hi. I'm new around here. I tried making some saurkraut according to

the NT recipe, but it looks and smells pretty funny. I didn't have

any whey so I just used more salt. It smells rather gross and has

black stuff growing on the top. Did I do something wrong? I'd

appreciate some advice on how to tell if my saurkraut is okay to

eat. Thanks. Bertie
