According to the out-of-favor theory, the energy would come from the

comet/asteroid passing through a non-uniform plasma in a trajectory

which is at an angle to the ecliptic. The theory predicts the sun has

a return current sheet which can more easily reconnect with the sun

because of the comet's passage. Hale-Bopp might be one example.

If I remember correctly Hale-Bopp had high temperatures for just being

a dirty snowball . There were a few very nice pictures of Hale-Bopp

at first, but thereafter, very little data. For such a spectacular comet

that seems unusual.

That's about all I will say about the theory since I'm not here to defend

it or enter into debate about it. Perhaps any future predictions will be

more accurate. LOL
