Guest guest
Omega Fatty Acids and Uridine Improve Mood Choosing to consume a low carb diet may do more than help you lose weight. According to a new study published in Biologic Psychiatry consuming cold water fish, such as salmon and sardines along with walnuts, molasses and sugarbeets ( okay, the last two are NOT on a low carb diet but I included them for completeness) can work as effectively as Prozac in treating depression. Omega-3-fatty acids have long been known to improve serotonin's ability to bind to cell membranes, but now uridine, an amino acid found in walnuts, cold-water fish, molasses and sugarbeets, seems to enhance that effect. Uridine improves norepinephrine and dopamine binding, the neurotransmitters that give you the " zip in your doo dah. " As a result, lower levels of BOTH elements result in the same anti-depressant effect as pharmaceutical grade drugs such as Prozac without the increasing side effect of suicide. So here's what you need to know if you suffer from depression or even " seasonal affective disorder " or the winter blues: Eat salmon twice a week and enjoy walnuts in a salad or as a low carb snack. You'll be stoking the fires in your brain's mitochondria and helping to keep your mood on an even keel. http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/healthstudies/a/depression.htm
