Hi way2recovery,I don't really think that the amount you are talking about are comparable to those used in cooking. Nutmeg has very strong taste and smell and I used it before for baking pate - I would take just a little, a pinch for the whole dish. You are talking here about 3 g for a single dose!!! that's a lot I think. And I don't think it's as safe as in food in this amount. You are right that nutmeg consists of miristicin and myristicin is a weak inhibitor of

monoamine oxidase (MAO). MAO (both MAO A and B) are found in neurons

but also in other organs. MAOs are also vital to the inactivation of

monoaminergic neurotransmitters such as: serotonin, melatonin,

norepinephrine, dopamine. So... nutmeg will mess up with your already

messed up neurotransmitters.

What's more MAO dysfunction (too much or too little MAO activity) is

responsible for a number of neurological disorders such as depression,

schizophrenia, irregular sexual maturation. MAO inhibitors are one of the major classes of drug prescribed for the treatment of depression - check MAOIs at Wikipedia.

What I'm trying to say is - you wouldn't accept another antidepressant

from your doctor to cope with your PSSD so why you want to take nutmeg???

Because it's natural and prepared by you it doesn't make it harmless to your brain. To: SSRIsex Sent: Thu, February 25, 2010 8:29:47 AMSubject: Re: Nutmeg as Aphrodisiac

thanks. it says that one of the compound myristicin in it is a weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor but I think its safe to take them as food in small amounts, otherwise why would they still sell them in the groceries if it caused health problem in the long term, im just guessing.
