Guest guest
Hi shyam, Read your reply to 's mail. It's nice to hear how the other side of the world looks, especially at a time when Swati and Mudit are here for our conference from Warrington. Mudit is just the same, but Swati was difficult to recognize at the airport. The best part was the secyrity at tajmahal refused to believe she is an Indian. They thought we were cheating them by not buying a 750rs ticket for Swati and Swati had to finally ask me for Channa murmura in hindi. It was real fun. I will try to send some photos. Guest guest
So far as I know the folks in Alabama are OK. I won't know about the property as far as houses go until maybe tomorrow and the rest later than that. I talked briefly to some yesterday afternoon because a big tornado went close to where friends and family live. One person they know has lost their house. No word on anything else yet. The warnings for today have been just to the west of us. Several tornadoes seem to have touched down though causing a fair amount of damage. The storms that will be here tomorrow will be the same part of the front that went through Alabama and that has me a bit worried. Most folks down there don't have storm cellars even though some of the old timers did. They thought it was kind of funny that I wanted an undergroud or earthsheltered house if I built my own place. This kind of weather is why. Anyway, tomorrow is going to be another rough one. It is looking much like the last big cell that came through here and was dangerous. Guest guest
That's good to hear. That last front that passed through here last week had a tornado pass over here but it didn't touch down. I had to sit in the basement for a while though I don't really think that would be much help given its layout. Earlier reports might have been wrong. I watched some video on the Weather Channel and they said the big tornado was in Birmingham. It looks like now that it was actually in Tuscaloosa which is to the northeast. The University of Alabama is in Tuscaloosa and I have friends with children there. This has just been an historic few weeks not only for the number of tornadoes, but how much damage and also the size and power of that one that hit Tuscaloosa. Its interesting that they have so much power given what a cold and fairly dry winter it was. Storms like this are supposed to need moisture in the air, but the South is still in a deep drought. Hid in the bathtub, ironically, because they do not have a cellar. Tornado hit 4 miles away from them but did no damage to their own property.Adminsitrator

They have extended storm coverage on this. I had been watching it for a few hours until I got on the net. Up here, we are under a flood watch. Downstate, water is about ready to crest over some levees. More rain expected tomorrow. Administrator
Guest guest
Oddly enough even with the drought, localized rain around my place has caused flood warnings to be up for many days. There is a stretch of the Alabama river that has a few dams and locks on it. It is mainly at those locations where the problem is. Pretty early in the season for those warnings. Here is a link to a website that posts national warnings by county and city on a map of the US. You can zoom in on any locations you are interested in. This is one of the most filled in I've seen the map, at least at the time I'm posting this. http://www.wunderground.com/severe.asp In a message dated 4/28/2011 1:56:41 A.M. Guest guest
Pretty impressive. I saw on a TV show abot America's infrastructure that the the Tennesse Valley Authority is supposed to have an earthen dam that is in pretty bad shape. It can flood Nashville if it breaks. Let's see if it holds up. Administrator Oddly enough even with the drought, localized rain around my place has caused flood warnings to be up for many days. Guest guest
The death toll in Alabama alone is already up to 128. Overall I've seen it as high as 180. That same front will be here in a few more hours. The weather radio just went off telling me there is a tornado watch until 3 PM. That storm front was rather mild this morning but as the day goes on it looks like it is getting stronger. In a message dated 4/28/2011 2:06:12 A.M. Guest guest
I talked with the folks in Alabama today. They're alright and no serious damage around my place or their homes. The storms were pretty severe though no tornadoes were produced in the immediate area. However, they knew people up in the affected areas. They know a couple of people who's houses were either damaged or destroyed. In Tuscaloosa, the neighborhood where one of their sons lived with at UA was leveled. The son of one of their friends had done a couple of tours in Iraq since he is in the army. He said the Tuscaloosa area was as bad or worse than anything he saw in Iraq. Injured people with broken bones and bleedings wounds were wandering around in the streets not knowing what to do or where to go and large sections of the city were in ruins. Many other small towns were also hit and badly damaged. The death toll has already exceeded 200 and is still climbing. More alerts here in Virginia. The watches are still on here though I think the worst has passed us by. One front that I thought was going to hit here had a slight northerly jog so I think all but maybe a little of the edge will miss us. All the same, I'm going to be glad when all of this mess is gone in another couple of hours.
Guest guest
I'm not sure if the National Guard was on standby or not but some 1,400 were in the field very quickly. My guess is that they were called up to the local armory and sent out while the storms were still happening. Some of my friends down there are volunteer firemen and during the last round of storms and this they were called out several times to handle emergencies. The Guard has been used a lot overseas. That was not the intended use for them either. The Guard was only meant to be called up for national emergencies or in the case of invasion, etc. The Reserves were supposed to be called up for war duty first. What has happened though was that the regular military was gutted by Clinton which meant the Guard was called up for active duty in place of the missing regulars. This will probably get worse because Obama's new Pentagon man has said his priority will be cuts. Cutting in the middle of three wars is a terrible mistake. Cuts could be made without harming readiness or troop levels simply by ending one or more of the pointless wars. It looks like we are losing in Afghanistan and Iraq will likely splinter as soon as we are too weak to prevent it. Then Iran will likely march across the border into the Shia areas and maybe more and perhaps beyond Iraq as well. Anyway, there were a couple of more alerts last night. One strong storm came up about 7PM that looked bad on the radar. However, all it did was rain hard for a short time and moved on. I'm not complaining though. Other parts of the state were hit pretty hard. In a message dated 4/29/2011 2:00:50 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, no_reply writes: Given that many of the state national guards are serving overseas, that might not be possible these days, but, let's face it, when we're not in wartime, most people who haven't served in the military think the National Guard is like the boy scouts. Many people wonder why their taxes are paying for these people to even exist. So why not use them? Get them ready after the watches go up but before the warnings hit, and then disperse immediately after the damage has been done. First Aid would be the priority.
