Dennis the > unlurkeringest! Thats probably true with limited pasture. The american bison/buffalo scavenged the naturally dried grasses under the snow. Hip, modern cows probably don't have access to enough winter pasture since the grass doesn't grow at that time. I think there are winter grasses that do grow like rye and wheat among others. My dad sowed winter grasses in the yard one year but said he wouldn't do it anymore since it required mowing in December, January, and February.
