Freezer Space

Greetings all!

I am thinking about purchasing a chest or an upright freezer so that we can buy

our meat in bulk and save a little money. There are just 2 adults here. How many

square feet would folks recommend? I'd rather go a bit large, but don't want to

way overbuy and waste space and electricity. Also, any opinions on chest vs.

upright? I imagine we will store mostly meat and maybe some veggies that we

grow. Thanks!

1. Get the biggest you have space for. If money is the issue, go for a " used " or

" display model "

(if it has a nick on it, it's $100 off, easy).

2. Chest freezers are far, far more efficient! First, the stuff doesn't fall out

when you open the door. Second, cold air SINKS, so opening a chest freezer

doesn't make the cold air " fall out " . Third, you can use a chest freezer for a

work table, which is really handy in a garage (or anywhere else, for that

matter). Just cover it with a bit of old carpet or a rag rug to protect the top.

3. DO NOT get a " frost free " model. They cost more, and they heat up to defrost

the food, which totally ruins it over time. If you have a chest freezer, they

won't frost up very quickly, and if they do, just attack the frost with a wooden

spatula.

4. The newer models take very little electricity. I think ours is something like

$45 a YEAR, and it's huge.
