[Connie] agar (in solid form) exact thing as the crystal deodorant

stones sold in

hfs. They bake with this.

[MAP]  Hmm, that's interesting.  I thought agar was some kind of

polysaccharide thickener or something, don't know much about it, but I

do use those " Thai deodorant stone " type thingies from a HFS.  Are you

saying I could buy agar from an Asian shop and use it instead?  I'm

having trouble imagining how those thingies could possibly be used in

cooking!  I hate it when those damn things fall and break because they

get too sharp to use without cutting yourself, so you have to throw

them away!  At least the Now brand ones are very cheap.

I apologize for sending folks on a wild goose chase as it were. Alum not

agar, though agar is also available.

Alum is a naturally occurring salt that is mined. It is the same thing that

is in your thai deodorant stick. The ones at the asian store are about 99

cents here. They are very rough and need to be sanded to be smooth enough to

use on your underarms.

Now you've gone and forced me to commit an act of (what may be considered by

some) Spam and I will probably be removed for it and cured of my habit of

obsessing about health. <horrors>

I sell the Thai deo stones here and have lots of info about them there in

that link and in this one:

I personally think that the alum at the Asian market is not worth the

trouble because you have to sand it for a long time to make it fit to use

under your arms (or on your feet). And the Thai deo stones that can be

purchased at the hfs (or my web site) are well worth the extra money for the

convenience, especially the one that comes in the container that looks like

a roll on, but if you were on a really tight budget, 99 cents might be the

ticket. I also sell a mist made of alum. <end of spam>
