It's possible to do it in a way that makes one lean, not fat. The deal is about what one's overall metabolic state is. You don't have to end up in starvation when reducing calories and working on empty. Although maybe that study was talking about a stupid 600 cal diet of soy oil and dextrose, oops I mean cheap meal replacement.
