Hi I’ve been physically sick for a pretty long time and I discovered

several months ago that I crave bass/drums. I think I need it to pump blood

through my tired veins and it feels so good to laugh. It might be heavy

metal or death metal or the new versions of progressive rock but what I hear

is LIFE! In fact I try to go to one live concert a month because I seem to

need the floor to throb. And, heck, it makes me smile, it's just so

outrageous.

I’m lucky to have small accessible venues around here that feature some

wonderful musicians. Recently I saw Doves and also Porcupine Tree. I saw

Ronnie Montrose too. He performed his original 70's rock band sound and that

made me laugh riotously: Every song -- like clockwork -- you get this

driving bass/drums throbbing sound. It might start out with a sweet melody

or maybe a kicky sort of pop sound but sure enough, dependably, along comes

this sound like a huge tank just rolling through.

Let's see... oh, I've got excellent seats to see Nine Inch Nails in

September. But I think my favorite album at the moment is Opeth’s

“Damnation”.

A really fun band for me right now is Arcade Fire and their cd, " Funeral " ..

sort of a cross between Talking Heads and The Velvet Underground... great

stuff.

It's funny. I meant to say something about this sooner -- the health

benefits of music are so wonderfully many and varied. Sometimes we want

enlightenment and enhancement and sometimes we just want passion and drama.

Sometimes you just plain want out of your brain or your body, right? That's

why we love our drugs. :-) We just want a break! Since I can't and won't do

drugs anymore I'm finding music to be a more than satisfying replacement.

So metal might seem an odd choice at first glance, maybe, but hey check it

out. ~Robin

Ps. And who knows, in a month I may be raving about Joni .... it's

all good...indeed.

Ahh. I knew there was a reason I liked you. Going to see Chevelle and

Greenday in August. NIN is a regular on the hi-fi at the house. Some of

the most cleanly recorded music on the planet.
