Guest guest
Well, we should be getting the 6 week old Silkies next week. I am wanting to make some scratch for them myself. Does anyone have any NN recipes? Also, as we construct the coop and nesting areas, I plan to document in pictures. I will post them up when complete. Lastly, I have read that hens like a southeast corner of the coop nesting area. Is this true? If so, does it depend on breed or climate? TIA, Deanna
Guest guest
A chicken ark! I always wanted to have one of those but we live on a pretty steep hill and so I converted an old shed. My chickens had free range over about a half acre. The eggs (and the chickens!) were so tasty. I lost a bunch to hawks though. In fact I watched as a beautiful Red Shouldered Hawk swooped down and simultaneously cracked the neck and lifted up my favorite rooster, Arturo. It still breaks my heart; Arturo was only about 20 feet from me and, boy!, did that hawk have to flap and lumber back up to her branch.. A beautiful heartbreaking site!! The thing that finally did me in was a BIG problem with rats -- they somehow gave the chickens an awful disease and so I had to kill all my girls. I've quit the chicken biz at least for now. Darn! My dream ark was one of this companies': http://www.henhouses.co.uk/aylesford.html I think they're still sold here in the U.S. A bit pricey but cool designs.. ~Robin

Since I took down the cardboard encirclement last week, they've been liking to sleep in the southWEST corner, but I don't know why. They're going on 4 weeks old and spent their first night without a brooder light (not by choice, because the bulb burned out). -- Quick, USUM (ret.) www.en.com/users/jaquick Term limits: one term in office, one term in jail.-- Wolfe.
