Grapeseed oil?

Hi, I am very new to all this healthy diet and nutrition so please

bear with me. I was explaining some of what I've learned to my dad

and one of my sisters yesterday and the subject of oils came up. My

dad said he'd seen a report on the news the other day about grapeseed

oil and that it was supposedly very good for you. I've looked online

and read a bit and it does seem to be but I'm wary of all I read

anymore. Does anyone know anything about grapeseed? I've searched

the messages for this topic and haven't found any messages regarding

grapeseed so I apologize if it's already been covered.

Thanks

Belinda

I think grapeseed oil is mostly polyunsaturated and therefore not a

good idea to consume. I did buy a bottle for massage and it went

rancid at room temp. fairly quickly. I'd also bet that most grapeseed

oils on the market are extracted by using nasty chemicals and high

heat--another reason to avoid them. Lastly, I've never read about a

traditional culture using this oil. My guess is that it is now being

marketed as a super healthy oil because there's nothing better to do

with all the leftover grapeseeds from winemaking (much like canola and

soybean oil.)

Grapeseed oil is mostly PUFA (polyunsaturated) and has a very high smoke point,

which

implies that it is highly processed.

It is a typical refined vegetable oil - the kind we need to avoid.

For cooking oils, you don't have a wide choice really - you can use coconut oil,

ghee,

butter (for light sauteeing) or animal fats like lard.

We don't use peanut oil.

Primarily because peanuts are just about the most contaminated in terms of

pesticides.

And also because of the high-heat, chemicals based oil extraction process (which

is

common among all vegetable oils).

I guess, if you can get cold-pressed, organic peanut oil, it may be considered

better,

but it is still an inferior oil as compared to butter, ghee, VCO, lard, etc.
