Hiya Christie,

Probably of no help, but I also do the 10-hour thing and also have lower back

pain - mine is worse when I wake up. I know it's the chair I use which is an

office chair, but the back can't be brought forward. The issue for me is that

my thigh doesn't take my back all the way to the back of the chair, so my lumbar

region makes a kind of curve. If I sit upright properly on it, then my knee

happens before the edge of the chair. Anyway it took me a while to figure out

that this was giving me backache.

Secondly, a medium-firm mattress does not seem to suit my spine. Stuck with

that though. I've heard soft mattresses are actually better as they give more

cushioning support and allow your spine to lie straighter. So if you haven't,

you could look into this.

I find the best chair is an old-fashioned wooden 1950s-type " schoolchair " ,

straight back-and-sides, in which I somehow manage to sit upright, usually

supporting my own back. I guess this is like the ball without the continual

toning effect!

Is a swiss ball like those giant exercise balls, or is it different? Let us

know how you get on!

Oh, finally, a physio said that my *calf muscles* had contracted as my " little

legs only just touch the ground " and most chairs and desks are set too high for

my feet to be flat on the ground, as per typists' manuals. This leads to bulky

calves as the front muscles are having to work against the back muscles when

walking, which are too short. This can *also* lead to lower back pain as the

whole " system " is shorter than it should be... not technical, sorry, but that

was the story.

Of course, regular stretching & yoga can help, and I was also given special

exercises, but I know what you mean - how much to counteract long hours of

staring at the square windows?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Helen

Re: OT - back pain and sitting

I have ordered a Swiss Ball. Even getting a really durable one with a pump

and two day shipping it was only around $70. If this works out, then maybe a

combo of this, a kneeling chair, and standing will do the trick. Maybe I

don't need a regular chair at all.

, no, I didn't adjust the Aeron. I didn't think of it, duh, and this was

my ex's chair and we don't speak anymore so I won't get a second chance. <G>

Please keep the recommendations coming, I really appreciate the help!

Christie
