Dioxin toxicity is largely mediated by vitamin A depletion and induction of vitamin A resistance, and vitamin A has shown to be protective against dioxin toxicity in animals. I'm addressing the argument that we must adopt a vegan diet to protect against dioxins for the next WAPF journal, which is being processed now. Guest guest
---So Dioxin causes Vit A resistance, then depletion and illness. Maybe I'm not understanding resistance.Dennis Well not illness in the sense that dioxin doesn't really do anything at the level that people are exposed to it, but dioxin both 1) depletes vitamin A stores and 2) causes cells to become resistant to retinoic acid, the hormone form of vitamin A, which can lead to a variety of endocrine-disrupting, reproductive, immune, and skin disorders, cancer, and death, depending on the species and the particular tissue. This is primarily in animals exposed to huge amounts of it, although humans can get acne from it when exposed to industrial quantities, and some animals exposed to polluted areas have some some of these conditions. Maybe, but doubtfully. The Vietnam veterans with the highest dioxin levels have a 10% reduced risk for cancer. That's what it seems like, though it doesn't quite say that explicitly here. Thanks.
