ok- family support? what the___? For the last almost 2 years i've had to "do asthma" myself!!!! no one in my entire family even thinks i have asthma!!!! When i told my mom i was going to the dr because i suspected that i had asthma her response was, " you don't have asthma." and "you'd know if you were having anasthma attack." DUH mom, i know every time i have one that i'm having an asthma attack. she referrs to my asthma meds as "your allergy meds. I've just decided that she's in complete denial, I've had allergies all my life and mom had asthma as a kid so why wouldn't i have asthma????? my theory is that when she was able to work( she can't now because she has lupus) she worked in the OR and when they didn't have anything to do she'd help out in the ER and her perception of an asthma attack is due to having seen the poor people come in the ER blue and 1/2 dead from a severe attack so she's decided that i don't have asthma... i "do my asthma" myself and

ignore my family when they tell my i don't have it ...REALLY HATE THAT IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY but you can't force someone to believe something they don't want to.sea_girl111 wrote: Is anyone else's blood boiling???Alana > Meanwhile,> my father thinks it's a bunch of crap the effects of secondhand smoke, since> he

my mother is the same way she has enought health problems of her own and they can't deal with ME having any health issues, I was alwasy the strong one, the one that worked out, skiied, traveled and made it work, she wants to see me married etc., my family support is just awful, my sister is more concerned the impact it will have on her and me enabling her social life, and whether she can dig into my paycheck at times and my father has a hard time accepting it because he has been a lifetime smoker military man. My friends all are fairly shallow and superficial so they don't want ot hear about it not really they are more concered about there own life, and any stigmas that maybe placed on them and

the inconvienence it would have on them.

I actually had a boyfriend bring it to my attention how horrible I was breathing and I knew I was but I chalked it up to being miserable and that was just a part of getting older until I couldn't carry on anymore and walk up a flight of stairs .... but the social support from him is even shady I figured that he doesn't have it so maybe he should look for a new make and model or someone younger.

it does kill me and piss me off that people feel the stereotype of asthma is "NO BIG DEAL" because so many people have it but until you experience it first hand it really is a big deal.

Yep, mine. Some ignorant people make me so mad. It's time for all of us to educate those around us as to the effects of asthma and how we feel when they act like this.

Some doctors still have it in their heads that if an asthmatic is not turning blue or wheezing so loudly you can hear them down the hall, that the patient is not having an attack. My doctor is great in that he always believes me when I'm having problems and knows I don't always wheeze and/or turn blue. My doctor also has asthma so he understands.

God bless you!

OMG same here, when I was in the ER a few months ago with LOW I mean in the low 200's in the PF department the ER treated me emotionally as if I was wasting their time, I was so hurt and upset, I knew I was having problems but because my lungs were clear of wheezing, I was not having an attack as they put it, but you tell me why after a steroid shot and an hour of a nebulizer treatment my pf#'s went up? JERKS! That's when I contacted my asthma dr, I felt as if I'd just been told it was in my head but we'll treat you anyways, my asthma dr then explained to me not everyone understands that not all asthmatics have the classic, turn blue, loud wheezing sounds when their attacks happen, to not worry about it that I did the right thing and to do it again and call HIM DIRECTLY from the ER when I go in, that he'll make sure I'm not treated like that again.

Unless they have it, it falls on deaf ears. Very sad to say but it's true. I try to deal with it with avoiding the triggers when I can. I know it's not a good thing to do but even in Church when they use the incents, I have to leave, I walk right out of church because my lungs shut right down. I tried last Easter to sit through it on the Friday night masses during lent and the lady behind me knew me and I almost passed out, I was stupid to try to stay, this was before I realized how serious the asthma really was. I have spoken to our priest and he says to leave when I have to that he fully understands. He's really amazing, so supportive in every area!

It sure does with some people. I'm glad your priest understands. I sometimes have to stay in my church's nursery when the perfumes and such are too strong. I can tell as soon as I walk through the door to the sanctuary if I'm going to be able to stay in services.

God bless you!

Isn't that crazy that people have to wear that mess so darn strong? Just take a shower, that will make you smell good! Forget the perfumes and body sprays! LOL

Good for your doctor. That's the main reason I've been seeing mine for so many years. He road me mercilessly to quit smoking for many years and warned me in mid-'99 that I was on the verge of a very ugly attack. Yes, it came in July of 99 and the 23rd of that month I laid the cigarettes down permanently. I got up that morning feeling like someone had tied plastic wrap around my mouth and nose and tied my hands down so I couldn't get it off. I was so very tight and only mildly wheezing. My doctor got me into his office and gave me 2 breathing treatments and a massive injection of some kind of steroid, then told me to get home and rest after he made sure I was opening up. By that evening I felt much better, but I knew if I smoked ever again, I'd be in

the same sorry shape. Now, I can't be near smoke because it will close my lungs tight.

God bless you!

Amen to that. I do use a very lightly scented lotion and deodorant after my shower, but that's it. I saw one of your posts about a store manager who put a sign on the case with the sprays and stuff. I wish the local store managers here would do that. I go into Wal Mart with my dust mask in hand just in case someone has been spraying that mess.

God bless you!

incents in Church bother me also. They use them at funerals as well and I

usually sit in back, but when my mother past away I was in front. When they

when by me I went into a coughing fit. Thankfully I had my inhaler and it

helped a little but I was embaressed sitting there coughing like that and not

wanting to leave my moms funeral.

I'm really paranoid about using my inhaler in church, I take it in with me

(I don't carry a purse) so I always having it laying with my keys next to

me. If I use it I'll get up walk down the side isle and go outside to use

it, wait till the coughing settles down and then go back in and sit in the

back.

We all have to learn those lessons on our own, we know too well that the more people push us to do something the harder we'll push back. Glad to hear she does respect your asthma and doesn't smoke around you. You know I can always tell when I car infront of me has someone smoking in it! Honestly I can smell it, makes me so sick to my stomach, I keep my recycling option on now.

We don't use incense but we have used candles during the Lord's Supper. (I hope I don't offend here, but I'm Baptist and that's what we call communion). That was cut out because I'm not the only one sensitive to smoke.

Has anyone else here also found you're sensitive to the scents in detergents and fabric softeners/dryer sheets? I can't even go into that aisle at the stores without my mask. I've been taking my brother to work until he can replace his car (the transmission gave out), and the stuff he uses to do his clothes makes me tight as a drum head. I've asked him to stop using it, and threatened to stop picking him up. He's not trying really hard to find something that won't trigger me, so I'm choking up everytime he gets in the car and I have to drive with the windows down to breathe. I can't find it within myself to make him walk 9 miles to work either.

Oh well, another rant for the day and another ignorant person who needs some serious education.

I learned from this group I believe that my attacks in the laundry room which I thought were in my head were from using dryer sheets and the detergent fragrance, Now I buy dye free and fragrance free. The dryer sheets are good for your dryer anyways so I tossed them out! I love putting on fresh smelling clothes but had to learn to live without it, the cleanness from my shower is good enough for me!

I really hate it when a smoker either in front of me or beside of me lets that poison out of their car into ours. It makes me sick too besides triggering my asthma. I actually asked a guy at Wal Mart, who pulled in to park as we were getting out of our car, to roll up his window for a minute so I could get out. I was nice about it and explained that I have asthma. Most of the time, people are really good about it as he was, but sometimes they can be really rude and ugly. A couple at a service station both got out smoking and I was pumping gas right next to them (VERY DANGEROUS FOLKS). When I asked them not to smoke so close to me and the pump, he got really rude and obnoxious. I let go of the pump nozzle, walked to the car door, got my

mask, and put it on. Then I went to the door of the store and asked the cashier to ask the folks to put them out around the pump. She did and they left mad. I've also asked people to go outside at the laundro mat more than once. It is non-smoking but some people can't read signs. Tennessee now has a state law that bans smoking indoors at most public places, YIPPEEEE!!!, but some people are either ignorant of the law or choose to ignore it.

I know I've said this before, but we all have to keep working to educate people about asthma and its triggers. I LOVE THIS GROUP!!!

God bless you!

Re: Re: FAMILY SUPPORT

Some doctors still have it in their heads that if an asthmatic is not turning blue or wheezing so loudly you can hear them down the hall, that the patient is not having an attack. My doctor is great in that he always believes me when I'm having problems and knows I don't always wheeze and/or turn blue. My doctor also has asthma so he understands.

God bless you!

I'm glad your sister finally got it. My daughter's best friend has two boys. Both of them cough and sniffle all the time because of the indoor smoking by her and her parents. I wonder how much longer the kids can take the smoke from three people before something bad happens.

God bless you!
