Guest guest
I would like to know who savagefilly is and why this type of message keeps coming. I personally am not going to open something like this unless I am sure of what it is and from whom. Maybe I'm jus paranoid-what with all these virus' running loose. Guest guest
Hi Peggy, What savagefilly sent is not an attachment (they're not allowed on this list). What she sent is a link to a web address - you can't get a virus from clicking on a link (at least not yet!) - it will just take you to a webpage. It appears that savagefilly uses some type of email program that stores her messages on a website rather than sending them through the email list itself, and you have to go to that website and create a password for yourself and sign in every time to be able to read her messages. I personally don't have the time to do this, so I'm sorry savagefilly, but I won't be reading your messages to this list until you get yourself a different mail program<g>. But let me reiterate - it IS NOT POSSIBLE for you to get a virus from anything that's sent to this group! What COULD happen, is that many of the virii attach themselves to the last message from a person that's in your address book, and then sends itself out to that person with whatever the title of that last post was, but with an attachment added on. If you EVER get anything from anyone (even someone that you're close friends with) that LOOKS like it came through the group because of the subject line, but which has an attachment added to it - do NOT open it - just send it to the trash because it most likely IS a virus. Or at the very least, write to the sender of the post and ask if they just sent you something with an attachment - most likely they'll say no, so you trash the attachment. But be careful - depending on how you have your mailbox set up, just trashing the message may not trash the attachment. If it doesn't, you'll have to go in to windows explorer or someplace and hilight the attachment (being VERY careful not to double click on it!!) and send it to the trash bin, and then immediately go and empty your trash bin. Always be leary of attachments that have " double " endings - like " something.doc.pif " - these are almost always a virus. And depending on what mail program you use (Outlook is absolutely the worst about letting virii into your system), even previewing a message can infect you with the virus. So if you see anything in your mailbox that looks the least bit suspicious, virus scan that file before you even preview it by using your own virus program if you're sure that your virus definitions are up to date (I'm updating mine every day right now as I've gotten 14 virii sent to me just yesterday and today alone). If you're not sure that your updates are current, or if you don't have a virus scanner (shame on you!!!!!), then you can go to one of the online scans (pc-cillin is good) and they'll scan for you for free. Just remember, this list DOES NOT allow attachments - that includes any pictures or anything - so if you get a message from this group that has any type of picture or anything that's not part of yahoo's advertising, then you need to beware and check it out. And also remember not to be angry at the person who sent you the virus - they probably don't even know that they've sent it to you or that they're infected, so just politely write them and tell them that their machine is infected and they need to stay offline until they repair their system. Speaking of this - if you SHOULD get infected (or know someone who has) the most " popular " virii have fixes at http://www.symantec.com Click on " Download Virus Removal Tools " on the bottom righthand side of the page. It gives a list of all the virii that it has a removal tool for, so just download the fix to whichever virus that you have and follow the directions. Just remember, virii are nothing to be afraid of as long as you understand what they are, how they can and can't infect your computer, and how to fix it if they do. - At 01:38 AM 12/8/01 -0800, you wrote: > > I would like to know who savagefilly is and why this type of message keeps coming. Guest guest
You're very welcome - I'm glad that it helped you, and hope that it can help others out too. I know it's scary stuff when you're not used to it, but it doesn't have to be. Just educate yourself about it and keep your virus definitions up to date and you've got nothing to worry about!! - At 11:20 PM 12/8/01 -0000, you wrote: >Sandy, >Thanks for the education on virus' and the virus software sites.
