Guest guest
Are most of you on low carb?? I've been eating low carb for years and have a lot of difficulty losing. Guess it was because my thyroid is not optimized. I am thinking about going on the core plan in weight watchers. I am ready to lose this weight. steph

Guest guest
Do you know why your triclerides are lower? So, what do you do towards correcting these numbers? I am hypertensive, too, which is under control with diauretic and beta-blocker. I have been hypertensive since I had my last baby in my late 20 with preeclampisia. I have had high cholesteral since I started menopause, I think. Do you think it is the Coca-Cola and chocolate? Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, Good questions but not sure at all — high cholesterol and high BP run in my family unfortunately and I am being told it looks like my “cause” since I am on VERY low fat diet over two years now and work out 5x a week --- and still have cholesterol at or above 220 with the ldl at 150 or higher . .. Not good and no idea why for me or for you... I really don’t want to add ANOTHER med for cholesterol but the GP and endo are hinting at that... Do you take anything for yours? I am 48 and heading into the H E ll of menopause and my hormones are ALL out of whack and I think that’s the main culprit for me — PMS has always been a rollercoaster to put it mildly so I imagine I am gonna be ready for the looney bin when I am full blown menopausal if something doesn’t give!! I take a low dose Beta Blocker for anxiety and borderline high BP now plus levoxyl... So BP is usually OK and no heart raciness unless a mini “panic” attack so I am ok there = it’s the cholesterol and metabolism I can’t seem to get anyone to help with other than meds and numbers... Guest guest
It's right carbs. Potatoes are a big no, no. Look at the G.I. Diet. I haven't looked at WW lately, if they have a GI plan then that be great. But yes, you thyroid needs to be on the mend before weight loss will happen. Just remember, slow! We joined a gym a week and a half ago. They showed me my target heart rate according to my fitness level. It's important for me to stay in that range, as I have adrenal fatigue. If we go over target heart rate we mess with the cortisol and hold onto body fat. I'm slowly moving over to the G.I. Diet. Kate At 02:26 PM 2/22/2006, you wrote: >Are most of you on low carb?? Guest guest
A few years ago I went on a cholesterol lowing diet. I ate NO meat, and watched my cheese intake, for 3 months. I wanted to see if I could lower my cholesterol. My HDL was great, my triglycerides were great, but my LDL was high. I think my total was around 242? I lowered it by 15 points, or so. Never went below 200. Until-----I got my thyroid medication right. Now it's in the 180's! I think I proved to the thyroid community that having your med's right, is the first step. Guest guest
I was told to try to lower my carbs and eat the carbs that are " better " for you, like in the South Beach diet. I never did that. Finally, now that my medication is right, and my anti-bodies are lower, I am losing weight. I personally think that one should eat the best they can. AND exercise! Guest guest
Hi Lynn, Thanks for your encouraging post — I am at where you were previously, headed toward getting those thyroid med right and cholesterol down! Guest guest
This is exactly what I think, Lynn. I've never had bad cholesterols at all, until, that is, I was severely hypo back during the summer a couple of yrs ago, right after I was entering these thyroid groups. Mind you, I was undertreated before, but a very major change was already in the works and was in the process of crashing again, right before I started treating myself with what and how much I needed to. Anyway, that's when the LDLs became bad for a brief period of time, and the triglycerides rocketed, out of nowhere. My diet was basically the same as it is now, except that I hadn't cut out the iodized salt and that sort of thing. Now that I've brought up my thyroid hormone, and it's " almost there " , I'm high in the good ones, low in the bad ones, low in triglycerides, and overall cholesterols are under 200. They WERE 150 or so most of the time, yet the balance wasn't nearly as good as it is now. They used to diagnose hypo with high cholesterols a long long time ago. Why should doctors do that now, when Big Pharma has so much to sell us, long term? Re: Re: Lab results-current > A few years ago I went on a cholesterol lowing diet. Guest guest
I eat beef every single day of my life, if not twice. I eat a very mixed variety type of diet, with veggies, fruits, but I do still eat whole grain breads, cereals, OATMEAL, and yes, I too drink Coca Cola, probably way too often. I do take Omega 3s and 6s, but something that had not occurred to me til now was that I have substituted all my other cooking oils and Crisco type products with Olive Oil. The only time I don't use that is when I am making a cake or biscuits (about once every two months or so), then I use the regular cooking oils or vegetable shortening, but not Canola at all and not soy or animal fat based oils. I use it for panbroiling meats, I don't fry anything, but I do put a coating of the olive oil in the pan before panbroiling, sometimes more than a tbsp for xtra flavor. I also use it to make my gravies or any sauces, which I hardly ever eat anymore (again, about once every couple of months, I get the hankering for the milk and flour based gravy, and I answer that call right away, instead of pigging out on something else that I don't have a taste for). I don't go out of my way to stop anywhere to buy the sweet stuff, but I do have this problem with the machines at work, since I'm burning calories at a higher rate when working on the nursing floor, have already consumed my homemade supper earlier in the night, and the machines are "there". That's my own lack of discipline, I should be able to stay away from them, but I don't. Otherwise, if I could, I would probably weigh around another 10 lbs or so less, at this point. I am 5'6" tall and weigh in now at 156. I just took my weight other night, for the first time in around 6 months or so. I think I've lost about 3 lbs since the last time I weighed, with no effort. It's slow slow slow, but sure, a tiny bit at a time, so I don't keep a weight scale at home, it's too frustrating for me to weigh once a week or everyday, and I get disheartened and impatient doing that so often. I do still run by the drivethrough windows about once a week for a good old poisoned hamburger, but that is not often these days, both for spending too much money and for a decent diet. I am not on any particular diet, just a wide variety, with a temperance for some things. I know that some people have stuff going on their bodies, that doesn't make for the best of situations to have low cholesterols. I DO thank my Mom for this one, plus much better thyroid treatment than I ever got from several doctors. However, if I could afford a good doc, I would trust a couple of them that we've talked about. It would be a lot of icing on the cake, lol. Re: Re: Lab results-current Do you know why your triclerides are lower? So, what do you do towards correcting these numbers? Guest guest
I get where you are going. I understand that having the " good " cholesterol high is a good thing. I thinks that why the Dr wasn't too concerned about my overall number. I just hated to be over the 200 mark! The Dr also knew that I ran over 10 miles a week, and ate somewhat good. Again it concerned ME to be that high. Lynn At 08:46 PM 2/22/2006, you wrote: >Your total cholesterol is irrelevant. If your total is 180 you could >have HDL of 20 and LDL of 160. That's bad.
