You need to have Free T3 and Free T4 tests, not just TSH, for adjusting meds. Hyper-like symptoms when increasing meds are most likely adrenal-related, especially with the blood glucose issues. I would ask the doc to run an 8 am cortisol test.cowgirlgrams wrote: Jan maybe you can help me on this one but would appreciate everyone's suggestions. If I am at the hyper end of range TSH 0.648 and came from a 3.89....and am having hyper symptoms now and affecting blood sugar...can it eventually level off or should I talk to the doctor and ask to decrease my meds a bit. I have an appointment with the PA Monday morning. This morning I woke up with no palps but a little weak and after an hour taking Levoxyl I felt

shakey/nervous, palps and sweating. If I knew it would eventually level off I'd feel better about it. Has anyone else had this problem. Thank you for listening.

Sounds like your on the right track. And, yes, making alot of changes at once can throw you into a mini tailspin. I think I was doing that in Nov and Dec with trying a couple of drugs (prescriptions, don't get excited, LOL!) and with adding in three extra vitamins to my daily multi-vitamin. I think my body just had to settle into the new stuff. Plus since I am messing with my thyroid levels, I am having shifts in my symptoms. I am told this is my body trying to re-regulate itself to find its new set point. Example, I used to be cold constantly (unless I was very busy) now I have hot spells. I seems to go back and forth. Same with the skin - used to be very dry, now some days its very, very soft. But most of the time it swings back it doesn't swing back as far as it was (not as cold, skin not as dry).

I know it can seem overwhelming. Just stick with these message boards. Yahoo has alot of thyroid related boards. I also visit the ones at Mediboards.com and at Healthboards.com. Everyone is trying to support each other. Some days we are the supporters and some days we need supporting.

Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you've been up to!

My understanding is that thyroid hormones adjust slowly. So it usually takes six to eight weeks before a med change shows any true effects. Checking and adjusting meds too frequently can cause you to be in a yo-yo or rollercoaster effect. I think its because the system starts fighting back on any med change which shows up as a spike in one direction or another. (The thyroid will "try" to regulate itself) You have to give the thyroid time to get used to the med on a consistant level. Once the body gets used to the consistancy then it will stop fighting it. This is, of course, my own opinion from my own research.

So I would go in every six to eight weeks. At the most, every four weeks. That may be another reason why the dr wouldn't order it. Don't really know.

I think I am getting too much too Kim. I had another terrible day

today. I got up this morning with no palps and calm...just felt a

little weak. Then I took my thyroid meds and about an hour later I

felt real shakey like low blood sugar, broke out in a sweat and bad

palpatations with burning sensation. I take 100 mcg of Levoxyl right

now in the mornings...two 50 white pills because I am allergic to the

dye in the other mcg. In the morning I am going to decrease and am

thinking of just taking .75 ...which would be a .50 and a half of

a .50...at least until I see the PA Monday morning. I am so frustrated

and know everyone has been there. I am trying to eat better

with ...more protein and less sugar because of the shakiness. So with

that and changing from taking my Atenolol in the morning with the

Levoxyl to at night I guess my body has been in an uproar. Any support

from anyone would be really appreciated....I cried today and asked my

husband to hold me I was so down. He tries to comfort me but really

doesn't understand the whole thyroid mess.

I have a feeling she isn't going to run the cortisol test because she

just ran it not too long ago. I asked them to run the Free T3 and

Free T4 the time before this last blood test and they said they

wouldn't and I finally got them to run the Free T3. This time they

wouldn't run either one of the Free's. I felt like they thought I was

crazy and also said that the insurance wouldn't pay for it to run

again so soon. They were even hesitant about running the TSH again.

Because it was only about 2 or 3 weeks since it was run but I had

gotten the weeks mixed up and went in a week or so too early to have

my levels checked for the last increase. I am probably confusing

everyone.

Thank you Kim! Yes, I post on different boards too for support. I

think this is my main board though...I quess because I feel it's

closer to home...SA I don't know what I would do without this

support forum. Wish we could find a good dr. close by though. I am

so jealous of the people that see Dr. R. He sounds great! Wish

someone could talk Dr. R. to move to San ! Wonder if Dr. R

knows of anyone in other areas...like here that is suppose to be good

with thyroid. I will keep you updated on what the PA says Monday.

Probably the most I can hope for is that she agrees to decrease.

Then to how much because I have to split the .50 pills without dye to

get wherever I need to be. Taking 2 .50's now. I heard someone says

they split doses like taking .75 one day and .100 the next which

would bring it to 87.5 which is close to .88 the next dose up

from .75. Wewwwww....I don't know how hard it would be to split

a .50 into a quarter....to bring it 87.5 again close to the .88. I

am sorry ..I am rambling. My computer has been down all day it's so

nice to have it back!

The T4-only hormone cannot especially affect you that fast, since it's not

direct T3. I'm suspecting that you may have a sensitivity to a filler in

the tablet, used to hold it together and form it. This is my best guess,

but, again, you cannot go by TSH-only for thyroid treatment, it is no good

for gaging what a dose is doing or not doing. Yes, this IS written in

granite. Did you have a blood sugar check any time lately? I'm going to be

posting my results shortly, and it's looking like the model for maybe some

adrenal problems, which I have long suspected, but haven't done anything

about. Looks like I may have to, but not before testing. No guesswork,

just like with the TSH-only thing.

Hi , I can't get Dr. Marcus's ofc to run a Free T3 or Free T4

very often. They don't seem to think it is necessary. I just had my

adrenals checked a couple of months ago and they were well in the

normal range. Yes, I just had a hypoglycemic test done this week.

The receptionist said I am not diabetic and doesn't show any

hypolglycemic. It was a two hour test and about an hour after the

test before I ate I got real shakey, headache, blurred vision, etc.

So it didn't show up on the test. What dr. do you go to for your

thyroid ? Do you have any problem with running a Free T3 and Free

T4 when you ask them to? I don't know if I posted this before but

when the receptionist finally called with my thyroid test and

hypoglycemic test results she said that Dr. Marcus wanted me to come

in to discuss it. The soonest I could get in is with the PA on

Monday so I made the appointment with the PA. She said if I wanted

to see Dr. Marcus the soonest would be the 20th. I said well I might

as well wait until the 17th when I have my women's wellness exam.

She said no you can't do that...you can't ask about your thyroid if

your appointment is for the wellness exam. I never heard such a

thing. She said that would be like having two appointments for one!

I couldn't believe it....This Dr. thing alone is

stressful! ....

A two hour glucose tolerance test will generally not reveal hypoglycemia. It usually does not show up until three to five hours later.cowgirlgrams wrote: Hi , I can't get Dr. Marcus's ofc to run a Free T3 or Free T4 very often. They don't seem to think it is necessary. You know I talked to other people and they say their test was

longer. My daughter had the longer test and she was diagnosed with

hypoglycemia. She carries glucose pills with her for emergencies. I

wish I would have known before having the test so that I could have

asked the PA to make sure she had the correct test run. I always

seem to be a day late and a dollar short! Wonder what story they

will tell me this time when I go in to go over the results. Thank

you for posting, Jan....

My hypoglycemia test took several hours with about 5 or 6 blood draws. I also keep gluco-support bars with me (in addition to my Metformin) at all times for when I feel a crash coming on and am gone from the house. They don't taste great but they do the trick.

Sometimes I can't get on the forum for a few days so I know this is

old but I just wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts and

prayers. It is so difficult and hard to figure out sometimes,

exactly what is going on. Keep hanging in there. I wish the doctor

would test your Free T4 and Free T3 and see where those levels are

at. The TSH is just not a good enough indicator. And I really,

really wonder if you might do better on Armour, you know, a small

dose at first and gradually build up?

,

Remember, you are not a day late and a dollar short, your doctor and

her staff are a day late and a dollar short! They are the ones that

should be on top of all of this. They shouldn't leave everything up

to the patient. Dr. Ozan might be worth a try. Your cortisol was

nearly out of range which MIGHT indicate that your adrenals are

working too hard trying to overcompensate, and that adrenal support

may be beneficial for you.
