I don't think either thyroid med or bp meds can "cause" low blood sugar. But then again the body is a mystical thing. LOL!

How I deal? Never eat sugar or carbs alone. That one alone is a good one. And eat smaller meals, more frequently. I have tried to do those things for several years. But the roller coaster is always there.

I recently came across a book (long story). It is "The Schwarzbien Principle". The motto the author, an endo form CA I think, uses is...You must be healthy to be thin, Not be thin to be healthy. The book talks alot about lifestyle and eating habits that support a healthy body and those things that tear down a healthy body. I have found it very informative. Her recommendation is to eat proteins and carbs together anytime you eat. Anytime, as in any snack or meal. And to "balance" them properly. She recommends a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein. Example, four ounces of orange juice has approx 15 grams carbs, and a stick of cheese has approx 7 grams of protein. She gets really deep on what foods the body treats as a carb and which as a protein and such. But I have fallen back to the counting carbs and proteins. I do still do the ratio though. It seems to help alot. I have not had near the low blood sugar roller coaster ride I used to have since I started eating this way about six months ago.

Hope that helps some.

Re: Hypoglycemic anyone?

Kim, It was weird I couldn't just reply to your message I had to go back to my original message and reply for some reason. I was taking Atenolol for palpations a couple of years ago and have been on it ever since...I really didn't have high blood pressure at the time. But I quess my question is that am I feeling bad because maybe it is a combination of uping meds and not eating right? Or can thyroid meds or Atenolol cause low blood sugar? Any suggestions would be helpful. Wondering which way the dr. might go with this as far as calling it hypoglycemia because I didn't have symptoms until after the test? Can the test still show something? Today I almost feel like I am having the same reaction when I upped thyroid meds in the past...heart palps, burning sensation, I am about ready to fall asleep typing this...I guess because I didn't get much sleep last night. I am just hoping to find an answer to why I feel so bad. How do you cope with hypoglycemia? ...

Amber, I have a question. What kind of orange juice do you drink? Mine doesn't have any protein in it at all. I usually eat some cheese with the OJ to balance them out. And I do use the peanut butter idea.

Kim M.

aka Hyperkim Re: Hypoglycemic anyone?

, I delt with Hypoglycemia for many years...

The recommendation is to eat 6 times each day. Not 6 full meals, but have a nutritious snack in between meals to help maintain your bloodsugar levels. By the way, Orange Juice or PeanutButter are Excellent for when your blood sugar levels are off. Having Low Blood Sugar leves does NOT mean that you should eat sugar. What that would do is cause your blood sugar to spike up high and then crash down low again. Basically, what you should do is eat something that has a little bit of natural sugar in it with protein in it as well....hence the orange juice or peanutbutter.

You sound very Hyperthyroid right now...per your symptoms you wrote about. And remember that blood sugar problems are a symptom of Thyroid Disease. Chances are, your thyroid levels being off is what is causing your hypoglycemia and your other symptoms, so if you are taking too much thyroid hormone, that could cause it, but the atenolol shouldnt effect it at all. I was actually taking atenolol at the time I had hypoglycemia and the atenolol didnt affect mine whatsoever. I was taking it for palpitations and miagranes.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

God Bless!

Kim, I just happened upon this thread and I just opened a bottle of Tropicana OJ, not from concentrate and it has 3 grams of protein listed...I've never noticed that it had protein before today. Guess the 3 grams will be enough? Cheers,Teekkmwn@... wrote: Amber, I have a question. What kind of orange juice do you drink? Mine doesn't have any protein in it at all. I usually go for a 2:1 ratio of carb to protein. So it would depend on how many carbs in the OJ. With 3 grams protein I would aim for 6 grams of carbs. That might be hard to find. I think what I have at home is the Tropicana Grovestand not from concentrate and fortified with calcium. (my son inhales the stuff, but won't drink milk. I am getting sly on getting cacuim into him!) I think it has either 23 or 28 grams carbs. I don't remember any protein. I will look when I get home. Thanks for the info.

Starting or increasing thyroid meds in general, or T3 in particular, can aggravate any existing adrenal insufficiency, resulting in blood glucose problems that may be manifest as either diabetes or hypoglycemia. This is one reason that the prescribing info for all thyroid meds states that adrenal issues should be addressed before starting thyroid meds. kkmwn@... wrote: I don't think either thyroid med or bp meds can "cause" low blood sugar. I also have hypoglycemia and have all the symptoms you described. I have to eat every 2-3 hours, small meals of course. Also, try to get a lot of protein in your diet, not OJ or milk. Lean meat, handful of nuts, organic turkey jerky...these all help me between meals.

Amber that makes more sense (OJ and peanut butter). I did look at my OJ last nite and it does have a whopping 2 grams of protein for the 26 grams of carbs. So I guess I learned OJ isn't totally carbs. LOL!

And I can't remember who mentioned it. But I am having less of a blood sugar problem as my thyroid levels come down. I am hyperT remember?

Have a Great Day!

Sorry to hear about your Father in law. It is interesting with the radiation and blood sugar problems though.

And the OJ discussion was very interesting. So no problem there.

Dear --

I don't know about orange juice or peanut butter,

except in huge emergencies where you cannot get to

something else to raise your blood sugar. When my

blood sugar is low, I drink tomato or V-8, eight

ounces or more, while simultaneously finding a meal.

Orange juice would simply make me spike way too high--

I haven't had fruit juice of any kind since getting on

the Broda diet.

Peanuts are potentially goitrogenic, especially if

raw. Peanut oil and I don't get along-- it makes me

break out something awful.

Having been severely hypoglycemic for the last ten

years, I can tell you that my best answer was to eat

meals low in carbs and high in protein. The BB diet

especially avoids grains, breads and sugary foods. My

best friend, who is also diabetic (type II), got

permission from his doctor to go on my diet, and he's

doing wonderfully on it.

My whole day is designed around my meals, as to avoid

blood sugar problems.

Best wishes--

Courtenay.

Your body is just going through so much right now.

Regarding changing your diet, if you go cold turkey,

it might take up to ten days to feel completely

comfortable again. I have to be honest with you-- the

Broda diet saved my life, in the sense that it

was very simple and completely healed my ability to

eat and function in this world. I hated being

hypoglycemic. Now, it's tolerable.

It's going to get better, , I promise. You

Levoxyl to at night I guess my body has been in an

uproar. Any

doesn't understand the whole thyroid mess.

I diasgnosed my hypoglycemia with symptoms but I do use a blood monitor when I feel it is warranted. A friend's dr. told her that thyroid issues and hypoglycemia go hand in hand. I also take Metformin, generic for Glucophage, to regulate my blood sugar but hope to get off of it with diet changes.

I have been tested for diabetes and was borderline prediabetic. Hopefully, diet changes will keep me from becoming diabetic.
