Guest guest
The steroid pack is horrible, well for me it was anyways. The dose is too high, Dr. R told me that it can really affect your adrenals, but once again, I don't know much of anything, that's just my opinion and experience with Medrol Dose Packsle816@... wrote: I have a bad sinus infection which started with cedar fever. Guest guest
A steroid pack and antibiotic is wonderful treatment, the steroid cuts the inflammation and the antibiotic gets rid of the infection. Is you just up the steroids and no antibiotic the infection will just flourish. I think the doc is right. M.sle816@... wrote: I have a bad sinus infection which started with cedar fever. Guest guest
You will not get over a sinus infection without antibiotics and lots of water in whatever form you can get it down, cold water, weak hot tea, herbal tea. When you take a shower, let the (comfortably) hot water run on your head and face to loosen up the congestion in your sinuses. I would take the antibiotics and skip the steroid pak. If you have some low dose hydrocortisone, you might want to ask your doc about increasing that dose by 50% for a few days only. That would be safer than the prednisone. I do that. If the doc has prescribed a fluoroquinolone such as Cipro, Levaquin, Tequin, do not take any steroids of any kind. Stop your hydrocortisone until you are through with those antibiotics. I had a horrible Adverse Drug Reaction on Levaquin which I had been able to take in the past. It seems that the difference was being on steroids. sle816@... wrote: I have a bad sinus infection which started with cedar fever. My doctor wanted to give me a steroid pack and antibiotic. Guest guest
Im just trying to figure out why my immune system got so low. I have been under a lot of st ress lately, but I am wondering...I had to take a lot of ibuprofen with the thyroiditis..could that have lowered my immune system? Or is the hydorcoritsone lowering it? I haven't been this sick in a long time. Steph
Guest guest
Stress will do it. If your Free T3 levels are too low, that can do it, too. I do not know about the ibuprofen, but I would not be surprised if that were a contributing factor. You may also wish to have your doc order a fasting blood glucose. sle816@... wrote: Im just trying to figure out why my immune system got so low. Guest guest
Jan, Interesting enough, I just got over a sinus infection too. The doc put me on Leviquin and it was not working (which is odd too) and so he put me on prednisone and within 24 hours I was better! Also, I firmly believe that my adrenal system is shot and that the prednisone made me feel so much better, more energy, killed my appetite so that I lost 2 lbs etc. And once I was off the prednisone I have felt so crappy, shaking hands, profusely sweating, heart racing and pounding, breathlessness etc..so I've ordered some Deltacortil (sp?) and I'm anxiously waiting for it to arrive! Guest guest
Did you gradually wean off of the Prednisone, or did he slash it all at once? If he cut it off all at once, that could explain your symptoms afterward. Re: Re: [Texas_Thyroid_GroupsSinus infection Jan, Interesting enough, I just got over a sinus infection too. Guest guest
If you are taking iron or calcium, they will interfere with fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Cipro never worked for me either. I later learned that my dairy consumption interfered. Prednisone is a powerful drug which can do some incredible things. It is also a dangerous drug which I believe pushed me from a small blood sugar problem into full blown diabetes. Tee wrote: Jan, Interesting enough, I just got over a sinus infection too. Guest guest
This was a big big no no, from the standpoint of most doctors, if not all. I can't believe that he didn't slowly bring you off of it over a couple of wks. The Medrol dose packs are designed, literally, in that fashion. The larger amt first, then less, then less, and so on. No wonder you were shaky. It probably would have, frankly, sent me into a paranoid state. Sometimes adrenals don't recover right away with that, and I believe that's in the literature about the stuff. The doses that come with an antiinflammatory purpose, to work quickly, are HUGE doses, unlike the little doses of hydrocortisone given people a few times a day for adrenal fatigue. The adrenal glands will very quickly cut off their own production of it with these doses, and that's why we have to be weaned ever so slowly, so to give them time to increase their own production of cortisol.
