I can totally relate. I've had to stop visiting my in laws because

FIL smokes and I can't even stand to be near him. I can't imagine

it being my neighbours that woudl be horrid.

Thanx, Guys,

No, I am pretty much stuck in this situation. We lost our house even

though it was a Life Estate, because we couldn't afford the upkeep.

We are seniors living on a Social Security shoestring. So anyhow, we

bought a manufactured home in a park. We rent the land, but the

doublewide home is pretty much permanently installed. The lots in

this cul-de-sac are pie shaped, so next door's driveway is just

outside our front screened-in porch. The side screened-in porch opens

to the backyards of neighbors in the next cul-de-sac. We are sort of

like sardines! Somehow I have to learn to live with this situation.

Any suggestions?

I still haven't managed to get my air filtration system. I will eventually, but I had other medical expenses that came up and slowed me down. I would highly recommend one for you though. The only one I found that wasn't made in china was the IQ Air...ironically, I heard that the Chinese government used this brand in the hospital rooms of sars victims during the outbreak...Which was REALLY funny to me...because when I complained to a company that their units were made in China..they justified it by telling me that since China has such poor air quality they are on the "Cutting edge" of this technology. It is spendy...but Probably costs less than one ER visit...I and definately would cost less than living without it for 10 or 20 years and coping with all of the medical bills resulting from chronic lung damage...Janet wrote: Thanx, Guys,No, I am pretty much stuck in this situation. Hi Jan,

It sounds like you've had a terrible time and I'm so sorry you had to

wind up in the hospital. The unfortunate thing is that you would

probably be feeling much better without the irritation of the smoke

constantly. I have to avoid all smoke like the plague, as it causes

asthma symptoms even with brief exposures. I wish I knew of a solution

for you besides moving, and it sounds like that is not an option. I

don't know if these neighbors are the type to be sympathetic, but maybe

letting them know how badly it's affection you would be helpful.

However, many people wouldn't care about how their smoking makes you

feel, so I know that is unlikely to do much good. I don't know much

about air filtration systems, but that is the only thing I can think of

to reduce your exposure short of moving somewhere else.

Hoping you are able to feel better,

I have a horrible reaction to second hand smoke. I don't allow

smoking in my home or van. I basically can't visit the in-laws

because of it, and they only visit here once in a while and for short

times. I would speak with your landlord if your neighbor's smoke is

causing you problems. Maybe there is a unit that there are no smoking

neighbors? Best of luck.

Jan I can understand. Secondhand smoke is bad. I usually have to run my air conditoner 24/7 simply because it filters the air. This aint fun and aint perfect but get an air cleaner (I have a three speed Hamilton Beach True Air and then keep the door to your bedroom closed. You can then go in and close the door again when you need a breather and settle down. Personally ask Doc about xyztel or singulair. I was on Allegra and my Doc just recently moved me off it.

Thanks, ,

Yeah, I think this asthma is a payback for me. I smoked for 29 years

and quit way back in 1983. One year later I came down with the asthma

problem, triggered by second-hand smoke. Talk about Karma!

Unfortunately, we own our double-wide, just rent the lot. So there is

just no way we can move, as it is permanently installed. I guess we

could try to sell and buy somewhere else. But my husband has very

poor health and I don't think he could survive another move. We've

been here since December 07.

Since I just don't have enough money to buy things I've just posted a

request on our local FreeCycle for more air cleaners or filters for

the ones I have. I'd love to get that IQAir filtration system

mentioned by , but I've have to sell my car to get it. If I did

that and my husband ran into trouble when he was out, I'd have no way

to get to him. This whole thing seems a catch-22 situation.

I have an appointment with my primary doctor in a few weeks and will

ask about that Xyztel and Singulair.

Thanks for everyone's concern. I've read all the posts carefully,

even though I haven't responded to each of them. I am keeping all

suggestions and ideas. I know all of you suffer, too, and I

appreciate your taking the time to address my problems.

(((Hugs))) to all of you!

Hi!! I know exactly how you feel.. When I was growing up, my mom was a chain smoker, and when I was living with my brother, He was also a smoker and his wife. Then my sister moved in with me, She also is a chain smoker. That is how I think I got asthma. But, now nobody smokes in the house. When ever we have friends or family who smokes, I tell them they have to smoke outside. They respect that. There's a neighbor who is a smoker, but they have the fan on so it won't bother us. How nice of them. So.. Hope this helps too!! DaveSara Highum wrote: Jan I can understand. Secondhand smoke is bad. I usually have to run my air conditoner 24/7 simply because it filters the air. Hi there, busy bee as usual. Classes at college are almost over for the semester. Whoo Hoo!!! I have to deal with second-hand smoke at home and school. My neighbors smoke as does my daughter. She smokes outside, though. I deal with the neighbors pretty well and rarely smell their smoke. At school, I deal with it outside all the time. The other students and faculty can be so rude. There is good news about that though. The college's president has officially banned all smoking on campus beginning this fall semester. So, that will help a lot. Keep trying to limit exposure to the smoke. Take care, Hoge wrote: Hi!! I know exactly how you feel.. I know, the expense of the air purification systems is terrible. It's rotten that insurance companies don't consider this a medical expense. If you have an fsa at work you can get a letter from your doctor and use that money. The fsa I have is really cool. I have a debit card so I don't have to pay and submit for reimbursement. The money is available at the begining of the year(you don't have to wait for the money to actually be in the account before you spend it.) Then they take out an equal amount monthly pretax from your check. It has worked out wonderfully for me. Unfortunately, I was too conservative in what I put away, and I had unexpected expenses. You can buy over the counter things like aspirin and cough medicine and even submit for reimbursement for mileage to and from doctors appointments. If you have one at work, I highly recommend i Janet wrote: Thanks, ,Yeah, I think this asthma is a payback for me. I smoked for 29 yearsand quit way back in 1983. At our local thrift stores there have been alot of air purifiers lately. You might want to check out any local thrift stores to see if maybe you might find one there. Good luck.Plan your next roadtrip with MapQuest.com: America's #1 Mapping Site.
