Guest guest
The doc in ville that quite a few folks in our group see is Launius in ville. He is probably the only Dallas area doc who is worth a special trip. He is good and he is cheap. He will rx generous amounts of any thyroid med you may want or need. Downside: he takes no insurance, does not treat adrenals. I am not sure if he treats hyper Graves patients. elijosiah1997 wrote: Tee,Who is the doctor you drive to see in Dallas? Your endo might be well respected but he sounds like he knows next to nothing about thyroids! This is not unusual at all. Most endos are good with diabetes but idiots when it comes to your thyroid. Guest guest
, I'll let you know after this weekend if Dr. Launius treats Graves. I'm taking my best friend to see him tomorrow...and she has been dxd with Graves. She also tried going to Blevins (one of his associates) here in Austin and that was useless. They told her that her original dxd with Graves is wrong (she has all the classic symptoms) and they basically told her it was all in her head (sounds like they have their heads up their butts)...I would not recommend his office except for diabetes related issues. He has an excellent reputation for diabetes treatments. Pickings are slim in Austin for a good doc that will listen to you and not soley rely on labs! Also, stay away from Scumpia - she is in bed with Abbott Labs and only pushs $ynthroid - and she undermedicates you too. Another friend of mine has an appt with Farenkamp here in Austin. We don't know how he views or treats hyp0 yet. I find Dr. Launius to be an excellent doctor that is worth the drive. He truly listens and treats you based on symptoms - using labs as just a backup to what he sees and hears. He has a personal interest in thyroids - he is hyp0 too!!! I've heard that his entire family is hyp0, even the dog but I have not asked him to confirm it yet! <smile> I did ask him if he was hyp0 and he said yes. He does not take insurance but his fees are extremely reasonable. For an office visit = $70 and plus labs. If you have recent labs to show him then he accepts those instead of making you do it all over again. He is not interesed in becoming a millionaire doctor...his office is very down to earth - nothing fancy - low overhead. His nurse, , is a great help - you can always reach her with questions etc. Oh and if you do have insurance that covers lab fees then you can go to any Quest Lab and have it done and your ins. will probably pay for it. Each time that I see him he gives me a Quest lab sheet that I just take to any Quest lab and they in turn bill my insurance company. Saves you some money that way. Good luck. Guest guest
I am surprised to see folks from Austin coming to DFW for docs. We have had good reports on in, Manzanero and Sebring. (Manzanero is no longer taking new patients.) The Launius family is like the family: doc, wife and two daughters all hypo. had hypo cat Toodles who went to kitty heaven. Launius hypo dog Ruby most likely now romping with Toodles. . . .Tee wrote: , I'll let you know after this weekend if Dr. Launius treats Graves. Guest guest
Jan, I have a co-worker who used Manzanero for a brief time...she won't go to him now. She said he demands really strange hours and days to see patients, if at all. And she didn't feel that he was truly trying to help her...he was more interested in charging really high fees. in is listed as doing "boutique medicine" on the group's list so I crossed him off immediately. Sebring is not in Austin but in Wimberely and I didn't find any info on Sebring on this list nor did I find anyone on here that has been to Sebring. I chose Launius because others on this list have been to him and I was willing to take a chance to find a good doctor. He is worth the drive to me. In fact I started out today at 6AM to take my best friend to see him this morning. Just got back home. And my best friend almost cried with relief after a 2 hour session with him. He has been the first doc that has truly listened to her and her symptoms and he explained everything in detail for her - he loves to diagram stuff - very visual fellow! If I thought I could find someone in Austin I would certainly go but so far I've not found many positive comments on any doctors here for thyroid issues. Scumpia left a very bad taste in my mouth. Blevins apparently is not much better when it comes to thyroid issues either. Austin, in general, suffers from a lack of good doctors. We do not have a medical school here - thus we do not get the cream of the crop when it comes to doctors...pickens are slim and have always been that way...even my internal med doc has been disappointed with who she can refer her patients to etc. for specialty cases. So I'll be driving to Dallas every couple of months... Cheers, TeeJan wrote: I am surprised to see folks from Austin coming to DFW for docs. We have had good reports on in, Manzanero and Sebring. Guest guest
It sounds like Manzanero has really changed. We used to get really good reports on him. has quit seeing thyroid patients. I think, unless these docs are hypo themselves, they get burnt out on thyroid patients. That is why and Launius both have large numbers of our members seeing them. They have "been there, done that and got the Tshirt." So, does Launius treat hypers, too? Tee wrote: Jan, I have a co-worker who used Manzanero for a brief time...she won't go to him now. Guest guest
Could it be that most if not all endocrinologists get frustrated and tired of treating thyroid patients when their treatment doesn't work, i.e. when they can't imagine why their patients still don't feel good, when they just go by their supposedly perfect medical lab ranges? How many doctors have told a patient it can't be their thyroid, when their TSH is falling between 1 and 5? Must be all in our heads, eh? nw > > It sounds like Manzanero has really changed. Guest guest
Yes, Launius is treating my best friend, who has had Graves disease for the last 10 years. She originally went to Scumpia 10 years ago...at that time Scumpia told her that she would just have to " live with it " . There was virtually nothing on the internet at that time about Graves. So my friend made the best of a bad situation...just about drove her crazy and us too. When I was dxd this past summer with hyp0, I started doing research and also looked up Graves info and passed it along to her. She fired Scumpia and tried Blevins (not him tho - won't see new patients at all) she saw a Dr. at Blevins office. First the guy agrees that yes she has Graves disease...the very next visit he tells her it's all in her head and that she needs a shrink instead. Dr. Launius took one look at her (prior doctor) labs yesterday and said, yes she has Graves. And that if he were in her situation he would have the thyroid killed. At this point her wacked out thyroid is causing her to wildly swing between moods and hyper and hyp0. He said if the thryoid was killed then the meds could stabilize her much better. She has been begging doctors to kill it for her and now has had two docs agree with her. Unfortunately both docs are not equiped to do the procedure. So now she has to find a doctor... Launius also dxd her as bipolar and started her on some new meds. He told her that the bipolarism is affecting her 70% of the time and the dying thyroid is affecting her 30% of the time. So we will see how the new meds help while she searches for a doc that will kill her thyroid for her. Launius told her not to have it surgically removed tho cos it would greatly affect the parathyroid. He told her to have RAI. I know there are mixed feelings about RAI but she is soooo sick and tired of the up and down - hyper and hyp0 that she just wants it killed. I'll keep y'all posted on events...btw Manzanero has also begun pushing special vitamins and other supplements that only HE can provide etc. Cheers, Tee > , I'll let you know after this weekend if Dr. Launius treats Graves.
