I would say that it's in spite of the fact that it's synthesized. Reznor seems to understand that music occurs in space and he sets up his recordings that way. They have a level of dynamic range that is unusual in rock music and he really, really understands the nature of deep bass. His CD's fully utilize the entire audio spectrum unlike most other recordings and even though you are correct that it is all worked to death in computerland he manages to lay the tracks down so they _sound_ like they are occurring within a full 3D spatial palette. Two of my daughters were out for dinner and called saying " Guess who was here? " Would have never guessed. It was from Staind and family. Too Cool!
